Angel Mateo Canavery (18501916) was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Argentine Army.[1] He served as Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, during the Conquest of the Desert.[2]

Angel Mateo Canavery was born 21 September 1850 in Buenos Aires. Born into a military family, his brother was Colonel Tomás Canavery,[3] a hero of the Battle of Valentinas Lomas during the Paraguayan War. His sister, María Juana Canavery was mother of General Enrique Mosconi. He was married to Mercedes Montero, maternal granddaughter of José Rondeau.[4]

Angel Canavery was descended from a traditional family of Buenos Aires.[5] His great-grandfather Juan Canaverys, was an Piedmontese who participated in the May Revolution of 1810.[6]

Military

Canavery began his career fighting against the army of Ricardo López Jordán. In 1880 with the rank of First Lieutenant, he served in the Conquista del desierto under General Julio Argentino Roca.[7] Canavery had been honored by the same chief Catriel with a poncho, in recognition of its value during the military expeditions.[8]

During the revolutions of 1880 and 1890, he remained loyal to the governing elite.

In his military career had various destinations including Salta, Córdoba, San Luis. And was appointed as military attache from Italy in 1889.[9]

In 1905, Angel Mateo Canavery retired from the army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.[10] He died on 20 July 1916.[11]
