- June 9 – Book of Common Prayer (The Booke of the Common Prayer) introduced in churches in England[1] as required by the Act of Uniformity of January 15,[2] resulting in the Prayer Book Rebellion breaking out in the West Country.[3]
- Sir Donald Monro, Dean of the Isles, produces the original manuscript of the Description of the Western Isles of Scotland (not published until 1582).[4]
- Approximate date – The content of the Guildhall Library in the City of London is 'sent for' by Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, Lord Protector of England, and never returned.[5]
