The 2011 Sukma Games, officially known as the 14th Sukma Games, was a multi-sport held in Kuala Lumpur and some other places in the Klang Valley, with 129 in 19 elective sports and disciplines featured in the games, while the 2012 Sukma Games, officially known as the 15th Sukma Games, was a multi-sport held in Kuantan, Mentakab, Pekan and some other places in Pahang, with 379 in 24 core sports and disciplines featured in the games.[1] The 2012 Sukma Games was Pahang's second time to host the Sukma Games and its first since 1996,[2] while the 2011 Sukma Games was Federal Territory's third time to host the games and its first since 1988.

Pahang is the fifth state to host the Sukma Games after Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Johor and Perak and before Selangor, Penang, Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu, Malacca since its introduction in 1986, the seventh in the 21st Century after Penang, Sabah, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu and Malacca and the first in the East Coast of Malaysia before Terengganu.

The final medal tally of the 2011 Sukma Games was led by Terengganu, followed by Selangor and Johor with host Federal Territory in fifth place, while the final medal tally of the 2012 Sukma Games was led by Terengganu, followed by Selangor and host Pahang and the combined final medal tally of the 2011-2012 Sukma Games was led by Terengganu, followed by Selangor and Pahang. Several national and games records were broken during the two games. In the 2011 Sukma Games, Johorian canoe rower Ahmad Shafie Abd Jabar and Perlisan cyclist Jupha Somnet were announced as best sportsman and best sportswoman respectively, while in the 2012 Sukma Games, Terengganuan weightlifter Abdul Mubin Rahim and Sabahan weightlifter Frenceay were announced as best sportsman and best sportswoman of the games respectively. Though there were several controversies, the two games were deemed generally successful with the rising standard of competition amongst the Malaysian states.

Organisation

Host city

The 2012 Sukma Games is the 15th edition of Sukma Games since its introduction in 1986. It was the second time the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia, Pahang held the national sporting event. Only core sports was featured in the games and all the states held their respective Sukma Games except for Perlis and Kelantan. Prior to this games, Pahang hosted the 1996 Sukma Games in which in came in third. As this is the second time Peninsular Malaysia's largest state held the grand national sporting event, many of the sports venues and facilities were either freshly completed or renovated.[3]

Meanwhile, the Federal Territory is host to the 2011 Sukma Games, the 14th edition of Sukma Games since its introduction in 1986 which featured only elective sports.

Venues

The 15th Sukma Games had 19 venues for the games, 17 in Kuantan and 1 each in Temerloh and Pekan respectively, [4]while the 14th Sukma Games had 13 venues for the games, 7 in Kuala Lumpur, 5 in Selangor and 1 in Putrajaya.

The Logo of the 2012 Sukma Games is an image of the elephant, a symbol of Pahang. Besides representing Pahang, the elephant represents the welcoming of the arrival of all participating states from Malaysia. There are five colours on the logo, the black and white represents the state of Pahang, the red represents the fighting spirit of all participating athletes in achieving victory, the blue represents the sporting and unity spirit of all Malaysians and the yellow represents Pahang as a sovereign constitutional monarchy and the pride, the cheers and the honour of all people involved in making the 2012 Sukma Games a success. Overall, it represents the prosperous and the welcome of all participating states and Malaysians to Pahang as host of the games.[5]

The mascots of the 2012 Sukma Games is a group of four elephants together as a family namely: Tahan (Father), Puteh (Mother), Rajah (Son), and Teku (Daughter), the four elephants are named after respective mountains found within Pahang. Elephant is the symbol and the state animal of Pahang which are found deep in the lush forest of Pahang. In the games, they represents the characteristics and soul of the Pahangites namely: courage, fast, competency, friendly, smart and caring.[6] Meanwhile, the mascot of the 2011 Sukma Games is a tiger named Harimau Muda (Youth Tiger).[7]

The theme song of the games is "Satu Tujuan" which means - One Aim.

At the 2012 Sukma Games, a total number of 1209 medals comprising 379 Gold medals, 378 Silver medals and 452 Bronze medals were awarded to athletes. The host Pahang placed third overall amongst the participating states.

Combining the medal table of both games, a total number of 1654 medals comprising 508 Gold medals, 507 Silver medals and 639 Bronze medals were awarded to athletes. Both host Federal Territory and Pahang's performances were their best ever yet. Federal Territory placed fourth overall amongst the participating states, whereas Pahang placed third overall amongst the participating states.
