Abdul Butt is a Canadian comedian, actor and writer. He is known for his work as a correspondent on This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
Early life
Butt was born in Montréal to a Pakistani father and a Portuguese mother. He attended Howard S. Billings High School in Châteauguay.
Career
Butt began performing stand-up comedy in his early twenties in Montreal comedy clubs. He began improvising interviews on the street, similar to Rick Mercer's segment on This Hour Has 22 Minutes. In 2012, Butt was the on-set warm-up act for Match Game (Comedy Network; Zone 3). That same year Butt met Canadian comedian Mark Critch, and in 2013 he was hired as a writer and performer for CBC Television's This Hour Has 22 Minutes.[1] Butt has been nominated for the Canadian Writer's Guild Award[2] and the Canadian Comedy Award.[3] In 2014, Butt was named by the Montreal Gazette as one of the top artists to watch out for.
This Hour Has 22 Minutes
In February 2014, Butt ambushed Quebec's premier Pauline Marois[4] to present her with a "certificate of intolerance".[5] He also ambushed Bill Cosby in January 2015.[6]
Earlier in his career, Butt interviewed protesters who opposed the appointment of an English-speaking coach for the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre in Montreal.[7] He also presented retired Herouxville city counsellor André Drouin with a plaque awarding him the title of "#1 Racist" for his intolerance towards ethnic cultures.[8] In 2013, Butt visited the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Headquarters to learn more about Canada's Communications Security Establishment (CSE), at the time called Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).[9]
