Adigrat University (abbreviated as ADU)(Ge'ez: ዓዲ ግራት ዩኒቨርሲቲ) is a higher education and training public institution located in the city of Adigrat, situated in the Eastern Tigray Regional State of Ethiopia. It is approximately 900 kilometers north of Addis Ababa, the country's capital.[1]
History
Adigrat University was established in 2011. It take its name from the city name of Adigrat. The main reason for establishment of the university is said to have been initiated by the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi during a visit to the town and a discussion with the town elders based on his government’s and party plan. The cornerstone for the University has been laid on December 2008.The University is officially established via a decree number 223/2003 by the Council of Ministers of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in May 26/2011. In July 2011, the University started its duties with 4 colleges and 13 departments by enrolling 960 students. Adigrat University has formally commenced the teaching learning process on December 5/2011.
