The Albert Barracks Wall on the University of Auckland campus is a remnant of the Albert Barracks, a major British military installation that overlooked Auckland, New Zealand, during its early colonial history. The Albert Barracks were built between 1846 and 1850 and enclosed 22 acres (8.9 ha). The fortification was built as a direct result of the Flagstaff War to reassure the Auckland population; at the time, the city was the capital of New Zealand.[1]
George Graham supervised the construction of the wall. Today, 85 metres (279 ft) of the wall remain. The remnant is the oldest surviving piece of British military infrastructure in New Zealand. On 23 June 1983, the Albert Barracks Wall was registered by Heritage New Zealand as a Category I structure, with registration number 12.[1]
