Alexandra Sophia Handal

Alexandra Sophia Handal (born 1975) is a Palestinian artist and film-maker who lives and works in London and Jerusalem.[1]

The daughter of Palestinian parents,[1] she was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She received a BFA in painting and art history from Boston University, a MA in studio art from New York University and a Phd in Fine Arts from the Chelsea College of Arts.[2]

Handal was an artist in residence at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and at Altos de Chavón in the Dominican Republic. She was a finalist for the Hassan Hourani Young Artist of the Year Award of the A.M. Qattan Foundation.

Her art has appeared in exhibitions at the Soho20 Gallery and the Dumbo Arts Center in New York City, at the DePaul University Art Museum in Chicago, in Dubai,[2] at the International Center of Bethlehem and at InIVA in London.[3]

Her 2008 short film From the Bed & Breakfast Notebooks was selected for the 2009 New Contemporaries exhibitions.[1]

She produced an interactive web documentary called "Dream Homes Property Consultants (DHPC)", which documents the social and cultural history of Palestinians in West Jerusalem. Her web documentary received a Lumen Prize People's Choice Award.[4]
