The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is a professional organization representing physicians of all oncology sub-specialties who care for people with cancer. Founded in 1964 by Drs. Fred Ansfield, Harry Bisel, Herman Freckman, Arnoldus Goudsmit, Robert Talley, William Wilson, and Jane C. Wright, ASCO represents more than 40,000 oncology professionals who care for people living with cancer. As the world’s leading organization of its kind, ASCO's mission is to conquer cancer through research, education, and promotion of the highest quality patient care. ASCO's vision is a world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy.

Physician education

ASCO offers several educational resources for cancer physicians and other health care professionals in the field of clinical oncology. These resources include scientific meetings, educational conferences, professional workshops, and special symposia on issues of particular relevance and importance to clinical oncologists and researchers.

ASCO publishes numerous journals, books, newsletters, and online and multimedia resources. In addition to producing the patient information website of Cancer.Net, ASCO publishes the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO), the most credible, authoritative peer-reviewed resource for disseminating significant clinical cancer research,[1] the Journal of Oncology Practice (JOP), with the goal of being the authoritative resource on clinical and administrative management for practicing oncologists in their daily clinical and administrative practice operations,[2] and the Journal of Global Oncology (JGO), the online-only, open access journal that fulfills a growing need for high-quality literature on the array of challenges that health care professionals in resource-limited settings face in caring for patients with cancer and in conducting research.[3] Two other online-only journals published by ASCO include JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics, which publishes clinically relevant research based on biomedical informatics methods and processes applied to cancer-related data, information, and images,[4] and JCO Precision Oncology, which publishes original research, reports, opinions, and reviews that will advance the science and practice of precision oncology and define genomics-driven clinical care of patients with cancer.[5]

ASCO also publishes special curricula to address specific educational needs of cancer professionals. ASCO University is intended to enrich the education and training of residents, fellows, and practicing physicians, with the ultimate goal of promoting high-quality cancer care.

Annual Meeting

With over 30,000 attendees, the ASCO Annual Meeting is one of the largest educational and scientific events in the oncology community.[6] The five-day event provides a venue for physicians and scientists to present research results to a global audience of oncology professionals. Clinical trial results and updates presented at ASCO's Annual Meeting represent the extent of progress made each year in the fight against cancer.

Publications

Conquer Cancer Foundation

Created by the world’s foremost cancer doctors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization seeking dramatic advances in the prevention, treatment, and cures of all types of cancer. Toward the vision of a world free from the fear of cancer, CCF works to conquer this disease by funding breakthrough cancer research and sharing cutting-edge knowledge with patients and physicians worldwide and by improving quality and access to care to everyone who is touched by cancer.

Through its Grants and Awards Program, the Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) funds the next generation of breakthroughs around the globe. Since the Grants and Awards Program’s inception in 1984, CCF has awarded more than $90 million in funding through nearly 1,500 grants and awards to researchers in 65 countries.

In 2015, CCF launched The Campaign to Conquer Cancer, a comprehensive campaign to raise $150 million to fund cancer research, support CCF’s top priorities, and bring national awareness to the Foundation.

CancerLinQ LLC is a subsidiary of American Society of Clinical Oncology, Inc. established for the development and operation of the CancerLinQ™ initiative. CancerLinQ™ is a health information technology platform aimed at enhancing and improving the understanding and treatment of cancer.

Cancer.Net

ASCO’s patient information website — Cancer.Net — brings the expertise and resources of ASCO to people living with cancer and those who care for and care about them. Cancer.Net provides timely, comprehensive information to help patients and families make informed health care decisions. Cancer.Net is supported by the Conquer Cancer Foundation.
