Aminul Islam (born 29 December 1963) is a poet and essayist from Bangladesh. He has written seventeen books including thirteen books of poetry. He has been involved in creative writing for some 20 years.[1]
Early life and career
Aminul Islam was born on 29 December 1963 in the District of Chapainawabgonj, Bangladesh. In the nineties of twentieth century he embarked as a poet and essayist in Bengali literature. In contemporary Bengali poetry he has developed a style of his own. He combines nature & modern life in poems very lively. His poetry is like a tree rooted in the fertile land of Bangladesh watered by rivers and stretching its branches & twigs towards the sky of greater international geography. He is a Bangladeshi by birth but a citizen of the whole world in mind & heart, thinking & expression. He is well skilled in all kind of verses but free verse is his main choice. He combines symbolism, surrealism and post-modernism in poems. Humor, satire and curiousness often add liveliness and enjoyable taste to his poems. He has been called " Shikorh Boibhober Kobi'[ শিকড়-বৈভবের কবি- the Poet of Roots ] by famous Bengalee researcher of comparative literature Professor Dr Shafiuddin Ahmad (retired from Shahjalal Science and Technology University of Bangladesh)in his widely read article titled " Aminul Islam : Shikorh-Boibhover Kobi." Many critics of Bengalee literature haves discussed in details about the poems, rhymes and essays on poetry and music( particularly songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the National Poet of Bangladesh )written by Aminul Islam. Some of them are Professor Dr Shafiuddin Ahmad (Shahjalal Science and technology University of Bangladesh), Professor Golam Kabir (retired from Rajshahi College), Professor Sarker Abdul Mannan (Executive Member of National Text Book Board of Bangladesh), Professor Shimul Mahmud (Rangpur Begum Rokeya University) Professor Mostofa Tariqul Ahsan (Rajshahi University), Professor Md Fakhrul Islam( Chittagong University), renowned Bengali poet Matin Bairagi, renowned poet-dramatist-essayist Farid Ahmad Dulal, renowned poet of Kolkata Uttam Dash, poet & essayist Yasir Aziz, poet & eassayist Mohammad Nurul Hoque and poet & essayist Masudar Rahman. Besides poetry, he has earned reputation as a critic of literature, particularly Bengali poems. He is very fond of music. He has been writing essays & articles on music, mainly about the songs of Rebel Poet Kazi nazrul Islam for a long period of time. For his significant contribution in the field of discussing songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam, he was honoured with Nazrulsangeet Shilpi Parishad Sommanona 2013 (Nazrul-songs Artistes Association Award 2013). He has 13 books of verses, 3 books of child rhymes and 1 book of essays to his credit. Some of his outstanding books of poems are : 1. Mohananda Ek Sonali Nodir Naam (Mohanada-Name of a Golden River); 2. Shesh Hemanter Jyosna( Moonlight of Last Autumn); 3. Quashar Barnamala (Alphabets of Mist and Dews); 4. Path Bendhe Dilo Bondhonhin Gronthi (The Path Without End ); 5. Swapner Haalkhata( Ledger of Dreams); and 6. Jyosonar Raat Bedonar Behala( Sad Violin of Moonlit Night). Aminul Islam traveled to Australia, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, India, Thailand and the whole of Bangladesh. Besides a prolific writer, he is a mid-level officer in the Civil Service of Bangladesh.
Islam is one of the most discussed poets of his generation in Bangladesh. He received a lot of awards and honours as acknowledgement of his contribution in Bengali poems. Some of them are 1. Bogra Lekhok Chakra Swikriti Puroskar-2010 (Bogra Writers Club Award-2010); 2. Shishikobi Rocky Sahitto Puroskar-2012 (Baby Poet Rocky Literature Award-2012); and 3. Nazrul-sangeet Shilpi Parishad Sommanona-2013( Nazrul-songs Singers Association Honour-2013).
