Animal House: A Dog's Life is a United States of America documentary television series about shelter, rescue, and stray dogs. Each half-hour episode consists of two to three segments on individual dogs from the New York animal rescue group, North Shore Animal League.^[1] The family-friendly series has featured many different breeds and dogs who arrived at the rescue for different reasons and circumstances. Segments show footage of dogs being adopted, and also include stories of their rescue, training, and rehabilitation.^[2]^[3]

Production and broadcast

The original title of the series was, "North Shore Animal Rescue."

North Shore Animal League sold the show to Cineflix, who produced it for Animal Planet. The series premiered on the United States's, Animal Planet and Canada's, Life Network (now Slice), where it received positive ratings and reviews.^[1]^[4]

The series is produced by Cineflix, in association with Slice in Canada and the Discovery Channel internationally. The series' initial run lasted one season, from 2005 to 2006, including 13 episodes. As of February 2016, the first and only season was available to stream on Netflix instant streaming.^[5]^[6]

Over thirteen weeks, the series examines the incredible stories of abandoned and orphaned dogs as they are rescued and cared for by the vets, trainers and volunteers from North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal shelter.^[7]

Each week, the 30-minute episodes follow the story of a different dog, each undergoing remarkable and extreme makeovers from abused animals - sometimes at death's door - to healthy, obedient, happy dogs ready to be loved and cared for as family pets. With real-life characters culled from the League's staff of 300, including 2 rescue teams, 12 veterinarians, 7 trainers and behaviorists, and 4 mobile adoption units and the more than 200 volunteers, viewers witness first hand the drama, compassion and sometimes humor, of the human-animal bond.^[1]^[8]

Sparkplug is a gentle Dalmatian who is secretly dropped at the North Shore Animal League at the crack of dawn. Tethered to a fence in the League's parking lot with a note attached to her collar, Sparkplug stands alone, wondering what she did to deserve desertion.

In episode two we meet Debbie and her dog, Shorty. Debbie needs help from the League as she has just been evicted from her apartment and can no longer keep her beloved pet.

The North Shore Animal League's Director of Operations, Paul Greene, is on the run. Florida is being pummeled by its fourth hurricane in two months. Families are being evacuated and animals are being left homeless. Local municipal shelters in Florida do all they can to save abandoned dogs – but they need Paul Greene's help. Paul and dog trainer Mike Malloy head South, where they get ready to save adoptable, family-friendly dogs. Three-legged, Trevor, is one of the lucky ones.

Now housed at the League, Trevor is prepped and primed by the League's devoted staff, with hopes that potential adopters will see beyond Trevor's missing leg and give him a new home quickly. Marge and her staff aim to raise record-breaking funds for the League's upcoming 60th anniversary celebration.

The Garcia family of New York rushes their beloved pup, Charley, to the North Shore Animal League for emergency medical care. The diagnosis is Parvo, a common but serious virus that can cripple those that it doesn't kill.

In New York City, wild dogs are running free, posing a danger to residents and to themselves. It's the job of the municipal animal shelter to round them up and bring them to safety.

Brookhaven, a municipal pound, is packed to the gills with stray dogs. If the dogs aren't adopted, they are in danger of being put down. The head of Brookhaven wants to save Cuddles, a scruffy terrier mix that was hit by a car and now can hardly walk.

Sixteen year-old, Kevin, needs to get his dog, Cujo, under control. If he does not, Kevin's mother, Barbara, may have to take Cujo back to where she got him. Cujo was adopted from the North Shore Animal League when he was just a pup.

In a salvage yard near Shea Stadium in New York City, stray dogs have the run of the road. Local resident, Robert Burns, wanting to improve the quality of the dogs' lives, spends his own time and money befriending and feeding them. Robert is trying to save the dogs from another brutal winter on the street. With a big storm due to hit, Robert calls the local municipal pound for help.
