Ashes in the Snow is a World War II drama based on the best-seller Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.
Plot
The coming-of-age tale of 16-year-old Lina Vilkas (Powley) who is deported to Siberia amid Stalin's reign of terror in the Baltic region during World War II. An aspiring artist, she secretly documents her harrowing journey with her drawings.[1]

Production
Casting
On May 19, 2015 it was announced that Bel Powley was attached to play the lead role of Lina Vilkas.[2] On November 3, 2015 Jonah Hauer-King was added to the cast.[3] On February 3, 2016, it was announced that Martin Wallström was casted as movie’s male lead, playing a Soviet officer taunted for being Ukrainian, who befriends the young girl and her mother.[1] Norwegian actress Lisa Loven Kongsli was cast as Lina's mother Elena Vilkas, James Cosmo as Mr.Stalas, Peter Franzén as General Komarov.[4]
Four Lithuanian actors were cast: Aistė Diržiūtė, Gabija Jaraminaitė, Darius Meškauskas, Ramūnas Cicėnas.[4]
Filming
In the late January, 2016 the filing began in Nida.[5] Filming in Vilnius began in April, 2016. Later it moved to Kaunas in May.[4]
