Assumpta Serna (born 16 September 1957) is a Spanish actress and author. Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Serna has performed in 20 different countries in six languages and is the recipient of more than 20 international awards.[1]

Biography

Serna was born as María Asunción Rodés Serna in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain).[2] She studied law till her 19, after which turned out to be an anarchist and joined the Barcelona's School of Dramatic Arts.[3] In 1993, she married her co-star in Sharpe's Company, Scott Cleverdon, who portrayed Lieutenant Harry Price in the film.[4]

Career

In her carrier as an actress Serna felt she was more successful in foreign countries than she was in her own country. Speaking to an interview, she said

Film

She is known for her role in I, the Worst of All (1990) portraying famous Mexican religious scholar Sor Juana. Other roles worthy of mentioning include her role as a Spanish guerrilla in the first four of the ITV Richard Sharpe series of films based on the novels of Bernard Cornwell and her Italian role, in the series, Falcon Crest.[6]

Although she predominantly played European roles, she has also played Colombian in two different films, namely Managua with Louis Gossett Jr., and Drug Wars in Michael Mann's series.[7]

She also co-starred with Antonio Banderas in Matador (1986), one of the first films by Pedro Almodóvar,[8] and she has also appeared in films such as Wild Orchid (1990), Chain of Desire (1992), Nostradamus (1994), The Shooter (1995), The Craft (1996) and Kiss & Tell (1997).

Her last movie is He matado a mi marido with Francisco Lupini and rodada en Octubre-Noviembre 2016, with María Conchita Alonso and Eduardo Yañez.[9][10]

Television

In TV, she has also appeared in Falcon Crest, in the 2003 ITV television drama,[11] and Henry VIII, as Catherine of Aragon, opposite to Helena Bonham Carter and Ray Winstone. She also acted on the most popular Spanish TV series Aquí no hay quien viva. From 2011–2014, Serna played one of the female leads, Vannozza dei Cattanei, mistress of Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, future Pope Alexander VI, in Tom Fontana's historical drama Borgia.[12]

She co-produced with Wildcard, (UK), a documentary called Fresco Fiasco and acted in the movie Behold the Monkey, two films about the famous restoration of the “Ecce Homo” who attracted the visit of more than 200.000 people from 170 countries to the little town of Borja to see the painting. Both projects were seen in February 2016 on the Sky Arts network in the UK.[13][14][15]

Education

She has written two books on acting technique, "Screen acting" or ″El trabajo del actor de cine″, which was the first book to be written in Spanish regarding the craft of film-acting, and "Monologues in V.O."

Through Foundation first team, she has published her first book on the collection ″First Female directors of Spanish movies″, written by Conchita Martínez Tejedor.[16]

Currently teaches courses on Communication and Leadership in English and Spanish. For actors, she has developed with Scott Cleverdon, the first University Master course for actors on "Screenacting". They teach with collaboration of more than 70 international entities, workshops around the world on "Directing Actors" and "The Script and the Actor".

They founded Foundation first team.[16] Since 2000, they have taught to 7000 students over 6 countries in collaboration of various film schools and film festivals. The last workshop has been in the International film Festival in Guadalajara, Mexico[17]

Foundation first team always include disabled and under privileged people in their courses.[18]

She has also served as president of AISGE (Actores e Intérpretes;— Sociedad de Gestión de España), Spain's Society of managing Intellectual Property Rights for actors.[19]

She has served as voluntary in many organizations, such as AMPAS, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, selecting foreign movies for the Oscars for 4 years. She also was a board member for eight years of the European Film Academy (EFA), bringing the European film awards to Catalunya in 2004, raising 1.8 million euros for the event.
