BAUER Aktiengesellschaft is a stock-market-listed construction and machinery manufacturing concern based in Schrobenhausen in Upper Bavaria, Germany.

Bauer is a leader in the execution of complex excavation pits, foundations and vertical seals, as well as in the development and manufacture of related machinery for this dynamic market. The Group also uses its expertise in the exploration, mining and safeguarding of valuable natural resources. In 2014, the companies of the BAUER Group employed some 10,400 people in around 70 countries and achieved total Group revenues of EUR 1.56 billion.

History

In 1790, Sebastian Bauer (then: "Paur") from Deggendorf, the son of one of the families of coppersmiths originating from Osterhofen (Lower Bavaria), acquired a coppersmith's shop in Schrobenhausen. For over a century, they worked on constructing breweries, installing copper roofing and manufacturing household items.

In 1902, Andreas Bauer drilled an artesian well in Schrobenhausen for the new water house at the railway station.[2] Well drilling became the new line of business for the company. For his son Karl Bauer, a key project was the construction of the central water supply system for the town of Schrobenhausen in 1928. With this project under his belt, Karl Bauer turned the company into a well drilling specialist, and the company was soon sinking wells and constructing water supply systems for towns and industrial facilities all over Bavaria.

Karlheinz Bauer, born in 1928 and a shareholder in the company since 1953, became the sole managing director and focused the company's operations on specialist foundation engineering. Two years later, the grout injection anchor was invented on the construction site of the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation) in Munich. Bauer patented this construction method and began marketing it internationally. The first construction site outside of Germany was set up in Switzerland in 1959 – the grout injection anchor began its success story. In the 1960s, this construction method was deployed in the construction of underground railway systems for many of Germany's cities.

In 1969, the company began the design and manufacture of the first anchor drilling rig and thus took the first steps in the field of mechanical engineering. In 1975, the company received its first contracts in Libya, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In the following years, Bauer Spezialtiefbau expanded its construction activities and equipment sales operations to several more countries, with new focus on the Far East from the mid-1980s.

In 1976, the range of machines was expanded to the BG 7 rotary drilling rig. Over the following decades, the BG series became the core of Bauer's equipment business. In 1984, the trench cutter was designed and manufactured. Thomas Bauer, who was the second Managing Director since 1984, became the sole Managing Director two years later in 1986. Under his leadership, the BAUER Group's operations in the construction and equipment sectors were internationalized.

Bauer und Mourik Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co (BMU) was founded in 1990. After 2002, the company acquired FWS Filter- und Wassertechnik GmbH to form BAUER Umwelt GmbH. 1992 saw the acquisition of the East German company Schachtbau Nordhausen GmbH. In the previous year, together with Schachtbau Nordhausen, the joint-venture subsidiary SPESA Spezialbau und Sanierung GmbH had been established.

In 1994, BAUER Aktiengesellschaft was established as a holding company. In 1996, the Deutsche Beteiligungs AG corporation acquired shares in BAUER AG in the course of a capital increase. The restructuring of the Group began in 2001. "BAUER Maschinen GmbH" along with the companies Klemm Bohrtechnik, MAT Mischanlagentechnik, RTG Rammtechnik, Eurodrill, TracMec and PILECO became active on the market.

On 4 July 2006, BAUER AG was listed on the stock market. On 20 April 2007, the company acquired the German Water and Energy GmbH (GWE), an expansion of business activities in the fields of well engineering, water and geothermal energy. In April 2009, a new works area with over 34,000 m² of hall space was inaugurated in Edelshausen. Previously, the Aresing plant was expanded. Bauer is world leader in the production of the entire range of machines for specialist foundation engineering.[3]

Group structure

The Group's business is divided into three segments: Construction, Equipment and Resources. The Construction segment carries out specialist foundation engineering work all over the world, developing foundation and excavation projects as well as providing related construction services. In its Equipment segment, in which it is the world market leader, Bauer offers an extensive range of machinery, equipment and tools for specialist foundation engineering. The Resources segment encompasses the Group's operations in the extraction and production of raw materials, in environmental technology, in geothermal ernergy and also in materials for well drilling and well engineering (including pumps and drilling techniques, screens and casings).

The Group has numerous subsidiaries, including Schachtbau Nordhausen.
