The Bodak (/ˈboʊdæk/ BO-dak)[1] is an undead creature in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game that comes from the Infinite Layers of the Abyss.
Publication history
The bodak was introduced to the D&D game in the first edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977-1988)
The bodak first appears in the module The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (1982),[2] and later appeared in the first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[3]
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989-1999)
The bodak appears first in the Monstrous Compendium Outer Planes Appendix (1991).
The bodak was further detailed in the first Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix (1994).[4]
Dungeons & Dragons 3.0 edition (2000-2002)
The bodak appears in the Monster Manual for this edition (2000).[5]
The bodak was detailed in Dragon #307 (May 2003), which introduced the bodak template, with the five-headed hydra bodak as a sample creature.
Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition (2003-2007)
The bodak appears in the revised Monster Manual for this edition (2003).
Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition (2008-)
The bodak appears in the Monster Manual for this edition (2008).[6]
Description
A bodak is humanoid in shape, with smooth grayish-black skin and a featureless face. Its gaze kills living creatures.
A bodak is always chaotic evil. It is said that humanoids who die in some of the most evil places of the Abyss return as bodaks.

The bodak appeared in Paizo Publishing's book Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary 2 (2010), on page 48.[7] The bodak is fully detailed in Paizo Publishing's book Undead Revisited (2011), on pages 4–9.[8]
Other games
In the D20 Modern setting, bodaks are said to be an undead form of greys.
