Brave Girls (Hangul: 브레이브걸스; RR: Beureibeu Geolseu) is a South Korean girl group formed by producer, Brave Brothers of Brave Entertainment in 2011.

The band debuted as a five piece with the single album The Difference. The songs Do You Know (Hangul: 아나요) and So Sexy were their promotional singles for the album. On 29 July, they made their comeback with reggae song Easily from their mini album Back to da Future. The group promoted a remix version of Easily on 13 August and released it on 26 August. They made an appearance in the movie Mr. Idol.[1][2][3]

Following a two and half year hiatus beginning in early 2014 the group returned in mid 2016 and with seven members, two being from the original line up. The new members that made their debut mid 2016 were Minyoung, Yujeong, Eunji, Yuna, and Hayun.

History

Pre-debut

On 14 March, Eun-young was revealed a member and the leader of the group. She is the niece of Shin Ha-kyun, an actor known for his role in Welcome to Dongmakgol and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.[4] Hyeran was revealed on 17 March and gained attention because of her resemblance to singer Son Dambi and old dance rehearsal videos that led to her name being feature on video sites like M. Goon.[5] Ye-jin became the third member to be revealed. She also gained attention because of her past as she was ‘Miss Seattle’ at the Miss Korea competition and her resemblance to actress Kim Sa-rang.[6] Seo-a became the fourth member of the group. She was previously a model before joining the group.[7]

2011: Debut, Back to Da Future and Mr Idol

On 31 March, Brave Brothers unveiled two images of the group that provided two concepts (a sexy chic and colorful eccentric) which the group will be performing with.[8] Two teasers were released of “So Sexy” and “Do You Know” in the first week of April.[9][10] On 7 April, they released their debut single album The Difference along with the music video of “Do You Know”.[11][12] They made their debut on KBS’s Music Bank with So Sexy and Do You Know.[13] On 24 April, they appeared on Gag Concert and performed a trot version of Do You Know.[14][15] Eun-young appeared on KBS's 100 Points out of 100 show and won 2 medals (Gold and Bronze) on the show.[16][17] The music video for So Sexy was released on 8 June.[18] They had a cameo appearance along with Superkidd on the SBS drama, Protect the Boss.[19][20] On 22 July, Brave Entertainment announced that the group would make a comeback during the month and shared concept photos of their mini-album Back to Da Future. Their title track, Easily featuring Korean reggae artist Skull, was revealed along with the music video.[21][22] Brave Brothers stated that the song was homage to Kim Gun-mo’s “Excuse”.[2][23][24] A teaser for the music video was revealed on 27 July.[25] One day later, the music video was released. The EP was released on July 29 and debuted and peaked at number 14 on the Gaon Album Chart selling 1,606 copies.[26][27] They made their comeback on Music Bank with the song “Easily”.[28][29] The group participated at the 3rd Idol Star Athletics Championship on 13 September.[30][31] They had a cameo appearance in Mr. Idol with Chocolat and other idol groups.[32][33] At the 19th Korea Culture Entertainment Awards on 15 December, the group received Rookie of the Year award in the Idol Music within the song category.[34][35] On 25 December 2011, they appeared on KBS 2TV's Let’s Go Dream Team! as special guests and performed for contestants of the show.[36][37]

2012–13: Re-Issue and For You

On 22 February, Brave Girls' second mini-album Re-Issue was released and hold a showcase with guest performance from Teen Top. The EP debuted and peaked at #14 on the Gaon Album Chart.[38] The title song Nowadays charted high on some charts and became one of the most searched topic. Instead of a "sexy" or "cute" concept, Brave Girls sported a masculine concept. The members said, “We think that we really need to show a different side of us. We understand that fans who waited for our sexy or cute concept might be disappointed, but hope that they would like this concept too.” Brave Girls made their first comeback stage on Mnet’s M! Countdown.

On 29 August 2013, it was announced that Brave Girls would have a comeback in the fall, with a new song entitled For You on August 31.[39]

2014–present: Hiatus, Line-up change, High Heels

In February 2014, Brave Brothers reported that he was going to be working on a full-length album for the group, but the album was put on hold indefinitely due to his working with AOA.

In February 2016, after a two and a half year hiatus, it was announced that Brave Girls would be making a comeback as a 7-members group, with five new members and two original members, Hyeran and Yoojin .[40] Brave Girls release their digital single "Deepened" on February 16, 2016.[41] On June 19, it was revealed that the group will be releasing their third mini-album, High Heels on June 27.[42] From June 21 to June 23, teaser images of each member were released to promote the upcoming release.[43][44][45] They released their third mini album on June 27, along with the music video for the title track of the same name. On September 1, the group released "Yoo-hoo" as a digital single.[46]
