Brechfa Forest Wind Farm comprises two wind farms which are planned to be built in Brechfa Forest in Carmarthenshire in southwest Wales. The two wind farms are proposed by RWE npower renewables to be built in Strategic Search Area G, created as part of the Welsh Government's TAN8[1] policy, published in 2005.

The Brechfa Forest Wind Farm projects will comprise two applications for consent. The first, Brechfa Forest West Wind Farm, is likely to have a capacity of greater than 50MW therefore the application has been submitted to the Infrastructure Planning Commission. The second, Brechfa Forest East Wind Farm, will have a capacity of less than 50MW and therefore will be determined by Carmarthenshire County Council.

The Brechfa Forest West development, located near the Afon Pib valley will consist of 28 turbines with a maximum tip height of up to 145 metres each. An additional twelve turbines are proposed at Brechfa Forest East near Abergorlech. The turbines will have the capacity to generate around 56-84MW at Brechfa Forest West and 24-36MW at Brechfa Forest East with an installed capacity of 2-3 MW each. Each turbine will be around 145 metres high and has created opposition from local groups and activists.[2]

As the Infrastructure Planning Commission ceased to exist from April 2012, the Brechfa Forest West application fell to the replacement National Infrastructure Planning section of the Planning Inspectorate to produce a recommendation for the Secretary of State at DECC. This recommendation, for approval, led to DECC confirming that development consent for Brechfa Forest West was granted on 12 March 2013.[3]

Carmarthenshire County Council Planning Committee approved the planning application for Brechfa Forest East at their 17 December 2013 meeting.[4]
