Brian Jones (activist)

Brian P. Jones is an American actor, educator and activist. Jones ran for Lieutenant Governor of New York in 2014 alongside Howie Hawkins on the Green Party of New York ticket.[1] The ticket received 184,419 votes (4.86%), which was more than enough for the party to retain statewide recognition. He is known for his performance of the one man play Marx in Soho.[2]

A teacher in the New York City Public Schools for 9 years, Jones has been prominent in attacking charter schools and other forms of school privatization. He co-narrated "The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman", which criticized the 2010 pro-charter documentary Waiting for "Superman". He also contributed to the book "Education and Capitalism: Struggles for Learning and Liberation".[3]

Jones, who is African-American, has written extensively on race, education and other social justice issues. Jones is also a member of the International Socialist Organization, a Trotskyist group in the tradition of the British Socialist Workers Party.[4]

Jones is enrolled in doctoral studies at the CUNY Graduate Center.[8]
