The Canada International Film Festival (CIFF) takes place annually at a casino in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The film festival was founded by Las Vegas businessman Rick Weisner and now owned by Monty Lapica.[1] The festival receives thousands of entries each year.[2] More than 90 countries have been represented at the festival.[3] The winners of the festival's awards are chosen by a jury.[4]
Recent award winners
Shadows of the Past, a film about Australian rodeo, was an official finalist at the 2009 festival.[5] In 2010, Land Gold Women won the festival's Royal Reel Award,[6] as did John Alfred Longlott's First Love.[7] Life Somewhere, directed by Mithun Chakraborty's son Ushmey Chakraborty, was named Best Feature Film at the 2011 festival[8] while Irish film Paperman won the award for Best Animation.[9] Documentary film If I Should Fall was granted an award of excellence that year.[10] In 2012, the festival's Rising Star Award went to Rise and Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story.[11] The Royal Reel Award for the Best feature film went to Life! Camera Action... directed by Rohit Gupta.[12] In 2013 Gin Cooley's "Pocket Full of Hope" directed by Jeff Wyatt Wilson won the Royal Reel award.[13]
Controversy
A 2013 Indiewire article called into question the qualifications and professionalism of film juries at Weisner-founded film festivals.[1]
