Castle High School, previously known as John H. Castle High School is a public high school located about a mile northeast of Newburgh, Indiana on Indiana 261. Castle is one of three high schools in the Warrick County School Corporation. It is the only non-Evansville school that plays in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference. Castle High School offers classes in agriculture, art, business and computers, English, family and consumers science, industrial technology, mathematics, music and fine arts, physical education, science, social studies, resource education, and world languages. Castle also offers advance placement, or AP, classes in English language, English literature, calculus, physics, chemistry, US history, biology, government, and European history.

In the 2010–11 school year, Castle's graduation rate within four years was 89.7% compared to a state average of 86%.[2] The Indiana Board of Education awarded Castle and all of its feeder schools an "A" grade, the highest possible.[3]

Marching band

The Castle High School Marching Band, known as the Castle Marching Knights, is under the direction of Tom Dean, Mark Eifler, and percussion director Nikki Miller. The color guard director is Sharon Ryles. The band features over 200 members in the wind, percussion and color guard sections. Their 2015 production was entitled "Archangel," and was inspired by pieces including "Angels in the Architecture" and "Doxology." In the 2015 season, the Marching Knights placed 2nd at the Clarksville, TN Bands of America Regional, 6th at the Indianapolis, IN Bands of America Super Regional, and 4th in Class A at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) State Finals. In 2016, the band traveled to Indianapolis for Bands of America's Grand Nationals. They finished 10th out of the 100 bands competing. [4][5][6]

History

Castle High School was founded in 1959 and later moved in 1975 to its current location on 92 acres (370,000 m2). In 2004 a new wing was added to the school containing a large Band Facility, two science labs, and several classrooms. Also associated with this project was the addition of air-conditioning to the smaller South Gym and a new state-of-the-art weight room facility and brand new locker rooms for the varsity sports. In 2008, Castle began construction on a library, to supplement the existing Media Center, and also broke ground on the natatorium, containing an Olympic-size pool, both completed by the 2009-2010 school year.

As of 2009, CHS has 1,864 students. CHS is by far the largest school in the Warrick County School Corporation compared to Boonville High School with 915 students and Tecumseh High School with 312 students. Due to their high enrollment, they compete in the SIAC as opposed to a smaller conference like Boonville and Tecumseh. With over 1,900 students as of 2015, Castle is the largest high school in Southwestern Indiana, almost 400 students more than the next largest, Evansville North High School.

Facilities

Castle High School is on a 92-acre (370,000 m2) site. The High School has a 6,000 seat football/track stadium. There is also a baseball and softball field, a soccer field, and 5 tennis courts. the building contains 2 gymnasiums, the North gym with a capacity of 3500, and the South gym with a capacity of 600. There is also a newly completed Olympic size swimming pool.[7]

Extracurricular activities

The Knight is the mascot of all the sports teams. Castle offers 12 sports in Varsity competition. Castle is home to the Castle Knightingales, the basic all girls show choir, and the Castle Knight Sensations, the advanced mixed show choir. They travel and compete in the Indianapolis area with s. They have won numerous Grand Champion awards. Castle also offers the following club sports: archery, bowling, soccer, lacrosse, and hockey. The School has won 5 state championships in athletics. The Football team has won 2 State championships, once in 1982 and again in 1994. The Boys' Soccer Team won a state championship in 2000. The Softball team won a state championship in 2001 and a state runner up finish in 2007 under the direction of Coach Pat Lockyear. The Girls' Basketball Team won a state championship in 2006. The Castle Volleyball team has won 35 Sectional Championships and currently has a streak of 23 in a row (1994 to present). Ginger Lutterman was Castle's volleyball coach for 23 years and she was inducted into the Indiana Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2010. The marching band has made the state finals for the past 10 years and in 2005 were state runners-up. Wrestler Caleb Schmitt won state at 135 pounds in February 2007. The Archery Team won the inaugural 2007 State competition and repeated as state champions in 2008 and 2009. The Competition Government, or "We the People," team has placed first in state competition seven times since the "We the People" competition's introduction in 1987.
