Politics
Marwalder joined the Young Liberals and sat in the Burgdorfer city council (1999–2002). Markwalder was re-elected to the National Council in 2007, 2011, and again in 2015.
After the election of Simonetta Sommaruga to the Federal Council, Markwalder ran in February 2011 for the vacant Bernese Senate seat. She finished in third place.
Markwalder was elected President of the National Council on 30 November 2015.
