City University is a private, not-for-profit foundation university located in Mogadishu, Somalia.
History
Established in 2012, City University (CU) is a not-for-profit foundation university located in Mogadishu, Somalia, that is pioneering quality instruction, research, and service to society. City University has introduced a number new features into the Somali higher education scene. From the foundations program that teaches the language of instructions in a professional format, to the libraries and laboratories, the qualification of instructors and cutting edge curricula, City University has raised the bar for higher education in Somalia. The facilities and equipment and their student centric pedagogy are making a tangible difference in the lives of young people in Somalia. City University is authorized as a degree granting institution by the Somali Ministry of Education Directorate of Higher Education and Culture and is a member of the Somali Research and Educational Network (SomaliREN).
Governance
The board of trustees
City University has an internationally well respected board of trustees from academia and the business community. They help the university fulfill its mission by providing oversight and input regularly. They advocate for the university locally and internationally to build its capacity for today and tomorrow.
The University Council
The University Council is the executive body, which is responsible for the strategic development of the University and recommends measures to raise its profile and increase its performance and competitiveness and consists of the President, Vice Presidents, Deans & Directors. Technical committees are called in for support as needed. The council appoints senior officials of the university with the exception of the university President.
The University Senate
The University Senate is made up of representatives of all constituencies of the campus community, including faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students. The senate provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and administrators to participate in shared governance. The Senate votes on policy-related issues and other governing aspects that directly affect the day-to-day functions of the University. The primary function of the Senate is to advise the University President on any matter or concern, including education, budget, personnel, campus-community, long range plans, facilities, and faculty, staff and student affairs. The Senate meets on quarterly basis to vote on proposals and other matters as submitted by its committees.

Campuses & Facilities
City University students study in one of three strategically located campuses in Mogadishu:
K4-Campus
- This campus is composed of six buildings and houses the administration, classes, a stand-alone library building, computer labs, prayer hall, bookstore and café. It is also adjacent to staff residential facilities. The University started here at K4 square in the Hodon district of Mogadishu, and is where students and visitors still come for admissions testing and processing.
Yusuf Al-Kawnayn Campus
- The campus is located opposite the Ministry of Security in Bondhere District of Mogadishu and is the largest of the three facilities operated by CU. The campus is composed of four buildings that house classrooms, computer labs, café, mosque, library, science labs, a greenhouse and a basketball field. The campus is also home to a large 500 person capacity air-conditioned conference hall built and equipped theater style for events a school gatherings.
The Marine Campus
- It is located in the Abdiaziz district of Mogadishu on the Lido beach. It also has four buildings housing the Mogadishu Marine High School, student dormitories, Marine Sciences college classes, marine vocational training facilities, offices, library, computer lab, prayer hall, a state of the art soccer field, dining hall and a marine laboratory. The campus is also home to the Marine Institute’s two boats: an 18-foot fishing boat with a 25 HP outboard engine and a 27-foot fishing and research boat with a 3-piston inboard engine. Plans are underway to build a swimming pool and gym facilities for students and staff. Plans are also underway to set up a state-of-the-art water testing laboratory at this campus in partnership with both local and international partners.
Libraries
The Barise Library in Mogadishu is the only free-standing library building in Mogadishu and holds over 30,000 volumes. CU also has a digital library with over 32 million items accessible internally without Internet and via a local area network. Digital contents include: PDF books, films, videos, journal subscriptions and more.
CU’s Professor Barise Library building is located at our K4-Campus. The other two campuses have libraries within the main building and book sharing between the campuses is simplified by the online library management software we use.
