Clay Johnson III

Clay Johnson III was the Deputy Director for Management at the Office of Management and Budget at the White House starting in 2003.

Early life

Johnson was a classmate of President George W. Bush at Phillips Academy, roommate and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity brother at Yale University, where he helped pull down the goalposts after a Princeton game, and received his B.A.^[1] He received his S.M. degree from the MIT Sloan School of Management in 1970.^[2]

Career

Johnson was previously President of Horchow Mail Order and President of Neiman Marcus Mail Order, the Deputy Director/Chief Operating Officer of the Dallas Museum of Art, and held positions at Frito-Lay and Wilson Sporting Goods.

Prior to becoming OMB Deputy Director, he was the Assistant to the President and Director of Presidential Personnel. Several members of Johnson's team at the Office of Presidential Personnel, including Dina Powell,^[3] Jodey Arrington,^[4] and Stuart Holliday^[5] would go on to substantial roles in the Bush Administration.

He served U.S. President George W. Bush since his tenure as Governor of Texas. From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Johnson worked with then Governor George W. Bush in Austin, first as his Appointments Director, then as his Chief of Staff, and then as the Executive Director of the Bush-Cheney presidential transition.^[6]

Personal

Clay is married to Anne Johnson and has two twin sons, Robert and Weldon.
