Danny Kerry (field hockey)

Danny Kerry (dob c.1970) is a British field hockey coach. He was a pupil at King Edward VII School (King's Lynn), in King's Lynn, Norfolk.,[1] and studied at Loughborough University and the University of Warwick.[2]

Career

Kerry lectured at Brunel University and Canterbury Christ Church University.[3]

He became Head of Coach of the Great Britain women's national field hockey team in 2005,[4] and continued in the 2012 Summer Olympics.[5]

In 2016 he was appointed Head Coach of the England and Great Britain Women’s Hockey teams on a permanent basis through to the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020.[6]

His team won the gold medal at the Field hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Coaching approach

Kerry made changes to his coaching following very adverse feedback after his role as head coach at the 2008 Olympics.[7][8]

He emphasises that 'culture precedes performance' and the importance of common purpose.[9] He encourages his players to consider scenarios and to work out for themselves how to 'find a way' in game situations,[10][11] and for 'collective ownership'.[12] His favourite quote or mantras for coaching are "You can't adapt to an environment you don't inhabit"[13] and "specificity is king".[14]
