Joshua Evans Turner,[1] better known by his stage name Dem Atlas (often stylized as deM atlaS),[2] is an American rapper from St. Paul, Minnesota.[3] The Village Voice listed him as one of their Five Rap Artists to Watch For in 2015.[4] He is a member of the group Sifu Hotman alongside rapper Guante and producer Rube.[5] He is signed to Rhymesayers Entertainment.[6][7]
Life and career
Born in Akron, Ohio, Turner moved to Minneapolis at age 4.[8] He attended the Eagan Senior High School.[9]
In 2013, Dem Atlas released his debut EP, Charle Brwn.[10] He released the DWNR EP on Rhymesayers Entertainment in 2014.[11] It was listed by Pitchfork Media as one of their Best MN Hip-Hop Releases of 2014.[12] In that year, Sifu Hotman, his collaborative project with Guante and Rube, released the album, Embrace the Sun.[13] In 2015, he released the single, "With a Smile".[14]
Style and influences
In a 2015 interview with Star Tribune, Dem Atlas stated that his influences range from Pharcyde to Nas, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Louis Armstrong, and Billie Holiday.[15]
