Dion Prestia (born 12 October 1992) is an Australian rules footballer with the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played for the Gold Coast Football Club from 2011 to 2016 and he was a member of the inaugural Gold Coast side, playing in the club's first AFL match in 2011.[2]
Early life and junior career
Prestia grew up in Melbourne's inner suburbs, playing for the West Lalor Junior Football Club in the Northern Football League[3] before moving to the Greenvale Football Club in the EDFL.[4] He then played for the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup in 2010.[5] He attended high school at Assumption College in the Victorian town of Kilmore.[6] In late 2010, Prestia was selected to represent Victoria Metro in the Under 18's championships. He recorded 21 disposals in the opening game of the tournament but would play only one more after an injury early in the second game ended his championship campaign prematurely.[7]
AFL career
Gold Coast
Prestia was selected 9th overall by the Gold Coast Suns in the 2010 National Draft.[8] He made his AFL debut in the Suns' inaugural league game against the Blues in the 2011 season. Prestia averaged 16.5 disposals per game in his first season, and had a season-high 20 disposals against the Bulldogs in round 3. Prestia served as vice-captain of the Suns from 2014 to 2016.[9]
Richmond
In August 2016, he announced he was seeking a trade to a Melbourne-based club, confirming months of media speculation.[10] He later announced Richmond as his preferred destination[11] and he was officially traded there during the trade period in October.[12]
