Diploma in Engineering
The Diploma in Engineering or Diploma in Technical Studies are programmes focused on practical and skills-oriented training. It is a technical degree that only covers the essentials when ranked with an undergraduate engineering degree. It aims to provide students with industry or job related engineering knowledge, scientific skills, computing & analysis, mathematical techniques, a sound knowledge of English to communicate in the field and ability to apply problem solving techniques.
Its duration is 2–3 years. Many countries in the world recognize it as equivalent to Pre-Engineering or Bridging course when considered for continuing studies in engineering related bachelors or associate degree programmes. After successful completion of Diploma in Engineering course, students can either continue further Engineering studies in undergraduate level or specialize in certain fields with an advanced diploma. Diploma holders gets employment as technicians, technologists, supervisors, superintendents, foremen, machinist, workshop technicians, draughtsman, station technicians (energy, thermal, aeronautical), automobile technicians, maintenance & service technicians, equipment mechanics and technicians, CAD/CAM programmer, agricultural overseers, instrument technicians, junior instructors, manufacturing, tool and die designers, electricians...etc.
In most of the countries one can apply for studying diploma in engineering degree after completion of 10th grade or after higher secondary school certificate or twelfth grade. Those who have a twelfth grade certificate in PCM require only to complete two years technical training excluding first year physics, chemistry, mathematics inter science level subjects.

Articulation
In India, a diploma is a specific academic award usually earned in professional/vocational courses, e.g., Engineering, Pharmacy, Design, etc. In such cases, a diploma is specific in rank than a bachelor's degree of that discipline but equivalent to general degree in that discipline, e.g., Diploma in Engineering of Electronics Engineering is rated differently from Bachelor of Technology in Electronics Engineering but is equivalent to Associate degree in Electronics as well. The course structure and syllabus are always comparatively equal with disciplines of engineering studies. Students enter for diploma courses usually after 10 years of school education where it is a 1+2 format, 2 years of technical oriented training whereas those with a physics, chemistry and mathematics background of 12 years education can get straight into the 2 year technical training via lateral entry. But engineering degree programs require 12 years of schooling and it is in a 1+3 format, 3 years of more theory focused technical training for post-graduate purposes, scientific posts as well as for entry jobs in technical fields.
After diploma, diploma holders might pursue advanced or concentrated area of study, e.g., Diploma in Engineering of Electronics Engineering may go for Advanced Communication Systems (ACS), VLSI Design and Technology (VLSI), Instrumentation and control engineering (PLC SCADA VFD DCS), Industrial Electronics (IE), Welding Technology, Fire Technology & Industrial Safety Management,[1] Industrial Design and Maintenance Mechanical...etc. Successful Advanced Engineering diploma graduates are considered equivalent to Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree holders and below in rank to honours degree in the same category. Private accredited institutions might issue advanced diploma certifications as professional diplomas.[2]
United Kingdom
A student can apply for admission to Diploma course after completion of Secondary School Certificate. After completion of Diploma course one can apply for 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate admission in some of the public and most of the private universities where they have to study for 2–3 years to obtain a B.Sc. Engineering. In some university's in United Kingdom and Australia accept the diplomas as 1-2 year progression (Recognition of prior learning) for engineering (subject to course selection) from Asian countries, they are considered equivalent to BTEC Diplomas in UK. Diploma in Engineering degree is comparable to BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) as per UK National Recognition Information Centre. Higher National Diplomas are equivalent to the second year of a bachelor's degree, these vocational qualifications are usually studied full-time for two years. HND courses are designed with particular job sectors in mind, the practical, skills-focused programme will equip the student to a level of expertise that is valued by employers and some professional bodies with international practice standards. HND graduates job profile designations ranges within engineering professionals and officers.

In India a Diploma in Engineering is a specific academic award usually awarded in technical or vocational courses e.g. Engineering, Pharmacy, Designing, etc. Studies of Diploma in Engineering is usually held in Polytechnic institutes recognized by respective State Boards of Technical Education/Examination (e.g. Uttar Pradesh Board of Technical Education) and/or State Departments/Directorates of Technical Educations and All India Council for Technical Education.[3] Diploma Holders can sit for the exam of Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers (A.M.I.E) membership, Member of Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, Navi Mumbai which is equivalent to the Associate engineering bachelor's degree. Diploma holders can enroll for advanced diploma programmes in concentrated job sectors within their area of study. Diploma holders are also eligible for lateral entry to the third semester Engineering Courses in various Technical Universities like UPTU, VTU, etc., i.e. direct entry to second year. Diploma holders are eligible for part-time entry to Bachelor of Engineering Courses in various Technical Universities like Sri Sai Group of Institutes, Lovely Professional University, Sharda University, Manipal Institute of Technology, Martin Luther Christian University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Delhi Technological University, NTTF Technical training center, Uttarakhand board of technical education (Dehradun)...etc. In Tamil Nadu the government is revolutionizing its technical education by upgrading its diploma courses with newer schemes (L Scheme and forward) comparable to UK's HND programs that enables students for direct entry into the fifth semester of a Bachelor of Technology programme.
Pakistan
In Pakistan, a Diploma is an academic certificate usually awarded by a technical board or university. It is earned in professional/vocational courses e.g. Engineering, Nursing, Fashion, etc. In Engineering, a 3 years program offers by public or private sector institutions, namely Diploma of Associate Engineers (D.A.E.) which is equivalent to Intermediate (Pre-Engineering) by IBCC. A candidate having SSC or TSC can enroll in that program. This program is offering up to 25 engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Electronics, Computer IT, Telecommunication etc. excluded Aeronautical and Nuclear Engineering.
Diploma graduates at entry are considered as associates to Engineers and are often called Associate Engineers. From field experience they are promoted with designation of an Engineer in their area of work. Diploma Graduates can enroll for Bachelor of Technology programmmes. Postgraduate Diploma or PGD are ranked higher than the bachelor's degree as they are completed after graduation. These are normally a year's worth of advanced coursework after a university degree. For Diploma holders to be specialist there are higher diploma programmes that may gain equivalency with engineering degree, it is equivalent to Oman's higher diploma programme.
