Edmund de Lacy, Baron of Pontefract
Edmund de Lacy (c.1230–1258) was the son of John de Lacy, 2nd Earl of Lincoln. When his father died in 1240 he inherited his father's titles and lands which included Baron of Pontefract, Baron of Halton, Lord of Bowland, and Constable of Chester. As he was a minor his inheritance was held by him in wardship by his mother. Normally his inheritance would have been held in wardship until he reached the age of majority (21). However, Edmund was allowed to succeed his father at only 18 years of age.[1] He was heir to his mother Margaret de Quincy and on her death would have inherited the Earldom of Lincoln that vested in her. (His father had only been Earl by rights of his wife.) As he predeceased his mother he never became the Earl of Lincoln.
Life
He was an important landholder in northern England, with a strategic manor at Stanbury which was important for east-west communication, and as Lord of the Honour of Pontefract he possessed Pontefract Castle.
He was brought up at the royal court of Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence, and made a 'Savoyard' marriage to one of the queen's relations. He married Alasia of Saluzzo (Alice de Saluces), the daughter of Manfred III of Saluzzo[2] and sister to Thomas I of Saluzzo. (Saluzzo is in Piedmont, now part of Italy.) Alasia had been brought to England by Peter II, Count of Savoy,[2] Eleanor’s uncle.
Henry de Lacy, 3rd Earl of Lincoln was their son.[3]
