Blessed Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz (15 February 1830 – 3 May 1903) was an Italian Roman Catholic bishop who served as the head of the Diocese of Susa. He founded a home for abandoned and abused children in 1856 and was also the founder of the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Susa.
Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1991.[1]
Biography
Edoardo Giuseppe Rosaz was born in 1830 to immigrants in Susa. His father was to commit suicide and his brother died sometime after. His sister also suffered from epileptic episodes which made life difficult for him and those around him.
Rosaz became a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis and completed his studies in Nice where he was ordained to the priesthood. He opened a retreat for girls in 1862 and founded the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Susa in 1874 for girls.
Pope Pius IX appointed him as the Bishop of Susa on 31 December 1877. The Archbishop of Turin Lorenzo Gastaldi consecrated him in 1878.[2] He encouraged religious orders in his diocese and founded a diocesan newspaper in 1897 titled The Rocciamelone.
He died in 1903.[3]
Beatification
The cause of beatification began on 26 July 1953 under Pope Pius XII and proceeded on a local level to investigate his life and compile a Positio that documented his life of heroic virtue; the process bestowed the title of Servant of God on him. Pope John Paul II declared him to be Venerable on 22 March 1986, and recognized a miracle attributed to him on 6 July 1991.
He was beatified in Susa on 14 July 1991.[4]
