Erik Hage

Erik Hage is an American author, journalist, and cultural critic from Rensselaer County, New York.

His books include Cormac McCarthy: A Literary Companion (McFarland & Co., 2010), which was deemed "indispensable," "engaging," and "highly recommended" by Choice, the magazine published by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), and The Words and Music of Van Morrison (2009).

He is also the author of The Melville-Hawthorne Connection: A Study of the Literary Friendship (January, 2014), which has been praised as "a perceptive and nuanced reading of the friendship between Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville," by Melissa Pennell (Student Companion to Nathaniel Hawthorne and Masterpieces of American Romantic Literature). A June 2014 Choice magazine review of the The Melville-Hawthorne Connection stated, "The readings of the novels, especially Moby-Dick, are excellent, and Hage's prose is graceful." In October 2015, LEVIATHAN: A Journal of Melville Studies (Johns Hopkins University Press) noted, "This lively, readable book ... will serve students and non-specialists as a reliable guide to the time-line and evolving emotional tenor of the perennially fascinating Melville-Hawthorne relationship ... The strength lies in its careful, concise reconstruction of the relationship as it unfolded in 1850 and 1851."

A piece in the Fall 2015 Nathaniel Hawthorne Review stated, "Hage has written an engaging, acutely sensitive study of what drew Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville together as literary artists and as friends. ... [his] lively and often penetrating study of this literary friendship contains a great deal of deft, lucidly and gracefully written commentary on the men's writerly personae and also about the literary and cultural milieu of the period in which they wrote."

Hage also penned two chapters in the 2012 volume The Album: A Guide to Pop Music's Most Provocative, Influential, and Important Creations (ABC-CLIO), and he was a contributing writer to The All Music Guide to Rock: The Definitive Guide to Rock, Pop, and Soul (2003, Backbeat Books).

In addition, he is a book reviewer for Harvard Review and has been a regular contributor to No Depression magazine and Pop Culture Press. A onetime news editor in New York City at MJI Broadcasting and Premiere Radio Networks, the largest syndication company in the United States based on popularity of programming, and a former newspaper columnist and feature writer, he is currently a department chair and professor at the State University of New York at Cobleskill. He has also taught at Elmira College, Binghamton University, and Excelsior College, and in 2006, he earned a New York Press Association Award for "Business, Financial and Economic" writing.
