Estadio Nuevo La Balastera
Basic data [edit code] edit]
Its main driver and promoter was the ill-fated president Alberto de la Corte López who rescued the old idea of a new stadium for Palencia in 2001 and encouraged public and private institutions to take over the project. His absence on the day of the inauguration was very remembered by all the fans. Alberto de la Corte López died after a long illness without being able to see his dream of a new stadium for Palencia.
It was built by the union of companies Hormigones Sierra, Real Estate Río Vena and Promotions Pal with a final cost of 18 million euros. The architect was Navarro Patxi Mangado, who sought a minimalist and sober style to the building. Particular importance was attached to the lighting of the building, both inside and outside. The stadium seats 8,100 people, all of them seated, unlike the former stadium of La Balastera. The name selected was to maintain the old stadium with the differentiation of adding the term "new". Other names shuffled were Kingdom of Castile, or the one of the athlete palentino Mariano Haro. In it are the offices of the Municipal Sports Board, Danisa Cristo Atlético and Club Deportivo Palencia, before the disappearance of the previous club that was inhabited by the Palencia Football Club.
Location
The "New Balastera" is located on the outskirts of the city, specifically in the east end of the capital. It is surrounded by the streets Marta Domínguez, Renault Spain, Portugal and Lola de la Fuente. It is located near the Avda. De Brasilia (the Vial) and the Exhibition Center.
Night aspect of the stadium, with its characteristic lighting turrets in operation.
The stadium came to recover one of the most remote areas of the city, near the industrial zone. Its construction not only meant the existence of a stadium of great architectural quality in the city, but also led to the creation of a whole new neighborhood, known as "Sector 8" (or "Barrio de la Nueva Balastera"). In this sector, a large number of blocks of houses were built around the stadium, complemented by a good amount of green areas and the channeling of a part of Villalobón Creek, which crosses the complex, originating in Palencia a new residential and leisure complex of Modern and avant-garde look.
Description
The stadium has a rectangular shape. It is minimalist and contemporary. The exterior facades consist of a low glazed floor destined to house offices, shops and other dependencies. On this floor are raised sheets of metal that cover the bleacher. In each of the four corners of the building are raised vertical towers that follow an oblique path towards the middle of its height, leaning noticeably into the stadium. The towers are not limited to supporting the lights but they are fundamental part of the image of the building and are perfectly integrated in the set. But certainly the most striking aspect of the stadium is night lighting. The towers of the floodlights are covered with translucent plastic sheets and are illuminated in their entirety. In addition, the separation of the glass and metal floors is marked by a series of little lights that surround all the façades of the building.
Despite its modernity it has become in very little time a symbol of the city of Palencia.
