European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists

The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) is an international scientific association. Its aims are:

to contribute to the development and application of environmental and resource economics as a science in Europe,
to encourage and improve communication between teachers, researchers and students in environmental and resource economics in the different European countries,
to develop and encourage cooperation between university level teaching institutions and research institutions in Europe.

The Association is a non-profit organization whose revenues must be used exclusively and completely for furthering these aims. The aims of the Association are mainly accomplished by organising workshops, conferences, events, exhibitions, seminars, meetings, and discussions, by cooperating in editing professional journals, and by promoting postgraduate education for junior scholars. Founded in 1990, EAERE has over 1.100 members from 80 countries, from academic institutions, the public sector, and the private industry. Interests span traditional economics, agricultural economics, forestry, and natural resource economics.^[1]

Annual conferences

The first EAERE Annual Conference Dates back 1999. Every year, participants convene to promote economic discovery, research, policy analysis and collaboration. Conferences are held in European countries and unite European participants with many colleagues from around the world. The activities at the Annual Conference include keynote speeches and policy panels, contributed papers presented in parallel sessions, and the General Assembly of EAERE members.

Every four years since 1998, EAERE's Annual Conference is held within the World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists, an important international event organised together with the sister Association, Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE). From year 2018, the World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists will be co-organised by AERE, EAAERE and EAERE.

Educational outreach

Each year, EAERE, the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and the Venice International University, jointly organise in Venice the European Summer School in Resource and Environmental Economics. This Summer School series provides advanced training to PhD students in specialised topics within the field of environmental and resource economics. The topic varies every year and reflects lively areas of current research and policy interest. From 2006 to 2009, the Summer School series was granted financial support from the European Community's Six Framework Programme, Marie Curie Actions - Human Resources and Mobility.

From 2010 to 2012, the Department of Agri-food and Environmental Systems Management (DiGeSA) at the University of Catania, the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE), with the support of the Municipality of Belpasso, organised the Belpasso International Summer School on Environmental and Resource Economics.

Official journal

The journal Environmental and Resource Economics (ERE) is the official journal of EAERE. The primary concern of ERE is the application of economic theory and methods to environmental issues and problems that require detailed analysis in order to improve management strategies. The Journal provides a forum for the further exploration of the causes, consequences and policy responses linked to these topics, across a range of spatial and temporal scales up to the global dimension. Areas of particular interest include: evaluation and development of instruments of environmental policy; cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis; sectoral environmental policy impact analysis; modelling and simulation; institutional arrangements; resource pricing and the valuation of environmental goods; environmental quality indicators.

EAERE provides its members with a biannual Newsletter, which is published in late May and late November. It is meant as an outlet for professional news. It includes workshop announcements, job offers, and other relevant information. It is a means of exchange about the role that environmental economics serves in Europe and the direction that this research field should take.

Awards

With the support of the Kempe Foundation, EAERE biannually confers the Erik Kempe Award to the best paper in the field of environmental and resource economics, published in a refereed journal by an author affiliated to a European research institution. EAERE also recognises outstanding achievement in two areas in contemporary scholarship through the European Lifetime Achievement Award in Environmental Economics and the European Practitioner Achievement in Applying Environmental Economics. The EAERE Award for Outstanding Publication in the Journal Environmental and Resource Economics (ERE), recognizes exemplary research published in ERE during the past year. The Award is given annually and announced at the EAERE Annual Conference. The Best Poster Award at EAERE Annual Conference recognises the best poster presented during EAERE Annual Conferences. In order to select the winning poster, the Award Committee takes into account research substance and quality of the presentation.
