Evan Joseph "Kaz" Kasprzak (born June 15, 1987) is an American tap and theater jazz dancer, best known for finishing third on the Fox show So You Think You Can Dance, and for being the first dancer on the show specializing in the style that the show refers to as "Broadway". He created the role of "Elmer" in the Broadway musical Newsies.
Early life
Evan Janet Kasprzak was born in Monroe, Michigan, the youngest of three sons. His older brother Ryan is a television choreographer and his brother Ian is a computer engineer. Evan graduated from Wylie E. Groves High School and earned a BFA in musical theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University. Before appearing on So You Think You Can Dance, Kasprzak starred in a short dance film entitled "After Hours", written by Nathan Hartman and directed by Jason Eberly.
Professional theatre
He was cast in the Paper Mill Playhouse live musical production of Disney's Newsies. He played the role of Tyrese in the Broadway production from Mar 29, 2012 - Aug 24, 2014.[1] He's now joining the touring cast of Newsies, reprising his role as Elmer and also playing the part of Spot Conlon, taking over for the tour's original Spot/Elmer, Jeff Heimbrock.
So You Think You Can Dance
He first auditioned in Season 4, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He made it as far as the top 40 during the Las Vegas callbacks, but was then cut. He returned with his brother Ryan in Season 5 to the auditions in Memphis. In the season finale, the 3,500 strong crowd at the Kodak theater began chanting EVIAN, EVAIN (alluding to supposed allegiance to the audience's favored brand of bottled water) after one of the hosts, Nigel, responded to the comments of another host, Mary Murphy, regarding Evan's purported lack of Jive technique with "I think you came out with guns blazing."
