Falakata College, established on 19 September 1981, is general degree college in Falakata. It is in Alipurduar district. It offers undergraduate courses in Arts. It is affiliated to University of North Bengal,[1] and enlisted Under Section 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the U.G.C. Act. ,managed by a Governing Body under the control of Directorate of Public Instruction, West Bengal.

The College is situated in Falakata, about 1 km from the National Highway 31. The College Campus is being divided into two parts, a two storied new building and the other is the old one storied building, midst which there is a green playground.

The College is run by a Governing Body which consists of a President, a University Nominee, the Principal, and some teaching and non-teaching staffs. The present Principal of Falakata College is Prof. Hirendra Nath Bhattacharjee. The chair of the President of Governing Body is held by Sri Shyamal Kr. Bhadra, a passionate social worker.

Affiliation

The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC),[2] and affiliated to North Bengal University.

Departments

Courses of Study

The college offers both B.A. General and Honours Degree Courses. It provides education to both male and female students in the following courses of study.

General Courses

The subjects offered are Elective Bengali, Elective English, Political Science, History, Philosophy, Economics, Education, Geography (self-financed)and Physical Education. Students are to select three Elective Subjects. In addition they have to take Compulsory Bengali in the 1st year, Compulsory English in the 2nd year and Environmental Studies in the 3rd year.

Honours Courses

The subjects offered are English, Bengali, History, Political Science, Philosophy and Education. Students are to select two elective subjects offered at the college. In addition they have to take Compulsory Bengali in the 1st year, Compulsory English in the 2nd year and Environmental Studies in the 3rd year.

Admission Procedure

Eligibility for Admission

Students passing the Higher Secondary Exam (10+2) or an equivalent examination recognized by the University of North Bengal are eligible to apply for admission in B.A. Honours and General course offered by the College (conditions apply). Those candidates who would obtain either 55% marks in the aggregate, or 50% in the aggregate and 60% marks in the subject in the said examination will be eligible to apply for admission to Honors Courses. However, SC and ST candidates will get 5% relaxation in both the categories.

Special Facilities

Library

The College has a rich Library with near about twenty thousand (20,000) books of different subjects. Students are provided with a Readers card for the Reading Room of the Library and a Borrowers Card which enable them to take out books on loan. The Library has a large Reading Room.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The NCC training of the College is running on full swing. Students can take part in the training conditioned to fulfill some criteria. Each year, many students from NCC get jobs in the Indian Army.

National Service Scheme (NSS)

The NSS programme is another important part of the College. Any student can take part in it. In addition to Regular Activities, Special Activities and Special Camps are arranged from time-to-time. At the successful completion of the one-year course, a certificate is issued by the University.

Students' Union

The Students' Union of Falakata College is formed on an Election held in each year with full membership rights for every student. The Students’ Union is intended to help the students to develop their social and intellectual qualities. The Game and Sports as well as the Cultural Functions are organized by the Students’ Union.
