Farm to Market Road 1956, FM 1956, or Hoosier Highway is a two-lane, state-maintained highway that connects the farming areas of northeastern Montague County including Capps Corner, Illinois Bend, and Corinth to Nocona, Texas. FM 1956 also intersects with Farm to Market Road 1815 leading to Bonita, Texas, FM 3301 leading to Lake Nocona, and other various county secondary roads.

History

FM 1956 was designated in 1951 from Farm to Market Road 1412 west of SH 51 (now US 385) north 5.3 miles to a road intersection. This route was cancelled in 1954 and replaced with FM 290. FM 290 was cancelled in 1990 and transferred to SH 214. FM 1956 was designated in 1955 from FM 103 east 2.1 miles. In 1957, FM 1956 extended east to FM 1815. In 1958, FM 1956 extended to its current east end. An unpaved road along the same right-of-way was used since white settlers began traveling west to Nocona in the late 19th Century. Nocona became the economic hub of northern Montague County by the turn of the 20th Century, and improved roads were needed to move goods (particularly cotton) to the railroad from the numerous farms in Northeastern Montague County.In 1956 (thus the name), the highway was paved and generally followed the right-of-way of the previous surface.
