Gianni Nunnari
Gianni Nunnari (born 10 August 1959) is an Italian-American film producer and executive.[1]
He is the president, founder, and CEO of Hollywood Gang Productions, a film and television production company. His films have generated over $2 billion dollars in box office[2] and in 2013 he was honored as producer of the year at the 2013 Ischia Global Fest.[3]
Early Career
Nunnari started working in US cinema with Cecchi Gori Pictures where he served as president and co-founder from 1987-2007. During his tenure at Cecchi Gori Pictures he produced a series of Italian films aimed at the US market including Mediterraneo, an Italian movie he sold to Miramax for worldwide distribution that would go on win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; Il Postino, a Pablo Neruda inspired book adaption that won an Oscar, and was nominated for four more including Best Picture; and Life is Beautiful, a $6 million budget movie that has grossed over $229.2 million worldwide and has earned multiple awards including the Academy Award for Best Actor, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Music, and Original Dramatic Score.[4] In addition to spearheading all US activities for Cecchi Gori Pictures, Nunnari was also the president of Penta Pictures, a joint venture with Cecchi Gori and Silvio Berlusconi.
Career
Regularly written about in trade publications, Nunnari’s development slate has many of the most anticipated feature tent-poles in Hollywood including David Fincher’s Seven starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey; Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn starring Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, and Quentin Tarantino. His highest grossing feature 300 was based on the Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name.[5] Nunnari convinced Miller to turn his graphic novel into a movie. Nunnari then developed the script and attached Zack Snyder to direct. They then went on to set the project up at Warner Bros. The original ancient Greek epic has global sales of approximately $700 million. The film had the most successful domestic March theatrical opening in history and grossed $300 million in just twenty-two days.[6] Nunnari has also produced a couple of Martin Scorsese’s films including Shutter Island, an Academy Award winner for Best Picture, and The Departed starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, and Alec Baldwin.
With the two companies he owns and operates, Tex Films and Hollywood Gang Productions, Nunnari has developed and produced many other mainstream Hollywood movies including 300: Rise of An Empire starring Sullivan Stapleton and Lena Headey; Alexander directed by Oliver Stone, starring Anthony Hopkins, Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, and Val Kilmer; Everybody’s Fine starring Robert De Niro, Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell, and Drew Barrymore; and Immortals starring Henry Cavill and Mickey Rourke.
Nunnari is currently in production with his latest movie The Domestics for MGM, and Hollywood Gang’s first TV series StartUp is currently streaming on Sony’s Crackle, which recently got picked up for a second season.[7][8] Silence, directed by Martin Scorsese and executive produced by Gianni Nunnari, is being released in December, 2016 and was under development for more than 20 years. He is also currently developing 300 III and Robotech.[9]
Lawsuits
In 2010 Nunnari sued fellow producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori over Gori terminating him from Cecchi Gori Pictures in 2008.[10] Gori counter-sued Nunnari for fraud, alleging that Nunnari had been funneling profits from Cecchi Gori Pictures into Nunnari's own production company, Hollywood Gang Productions.[11] The courts dismissed Nunnari's claims and awarded Gori $13,226,125 in damages, as well as $2,608,075 in interest and rights to the film adaptation of Shūsaku Endō's Silence.[11] The case was eventually settled and both, Nunnari and Gori, were awarded credit on Silence.[12]
Personal Life
In 2015, Nunnari welcomed the birth of his second daughter, his first child with actress and model Vanessa Hessler.[13]
