Goodhew (Kent cricketer)
Goodhew (first name and dates unknown) was an English professional cricketer who made four known appearances in first-class cricket matches from 1789 to 1795. He was mainly associated with Kent and his career continued in other matches until 1800.[1][2][3][4]
Cricket career
According to both CricketArchive and ESPNcricinfo, Goodhew made three first-class appearances for Kent from 1791 to 1795, scoring 27 runs with a highest score of 15 and dismissing two batsmen, both caught. There is no record of him being a bowler. He is first recorded playing for London against Middlesex at Lord's Old Ground in September 1789 and it is seeming that Scores & Biographies rated this a first-class match and the online sources do not. Goodhew was third in the London batting order and, he scoring 7 and 6, London winning by 2 wickets.[5]
In August 1791, Goodhew was playing at Lord's again, this time appearing for his county team Kent in a first-class match against Marylebone Cricket Club (the MCC). Batting fifth for Kent, he scoring 1 and 15, Kent won by 5 wickets.[6]
Goodhew returning to Lord's again in August 1794, he was playing for Kent against a Berkshire team called "Oldfield" and this is rated a first-class match. He scored 0 and 1, Oldfield winning by 49 runs.[7]
In August 1795, Kent was hosting an England team on Penenden Heath in the county of Kent. Goodhew scored 10 and 0 for Kent, the England team winning this first-class match by 5 wickets.[8]
Goodhew was not recorded again until 1800 when he was being involved in six matches that are not now being rated first-class. He was appearing for a Rochester team and for Kent again.[3]
