The Grand Castle is a residential development in Grandville, Michigan that has a design inspired by the Neuschwanstein Castle.[1] It has been described "as the second largest castle structure in the world".[2]
History
The site was originally developed as the LaGrande Mobile Home Park in 1957, one of the oldest mobile home developments in the area. LaGrande was later purchased by Land & Co. and closed in 2005.[2] After years of lower building proposals in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, proposals and new construction began to increase to some of their highest rates in 2015 and 2016.[3]
Design and construction
The origination of the Grand Castle is rooted from the owner's admiration of the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, with the owner, Roger Lucas, who stated that he had visited the Bavarian castle "at least 10 times". The original proposal for the 23.6 acre site included a 12-story building, though the final design was larger.[1][2][4]
The materials chosen for the castle included all concrete siding and walls as well as steel roofing. The 15-story building includes 400 apartments, three story penthouses, as well as 750 covered parking spaces. In the surrounding area, recreation activities include swimming or fishing in the 26 Sanford Lake, a "resort style swimming pool", as well as a dog park.[1][2][4]
Construction for the Grand Castle began in April 2016, with the castle passing the 100 foot mark on September 13, 2016.[1][2]
Proposed developments
Future proposals for the development include surrounding "carriage houses", with a proposed total of 100 two-story apartment structures. There is also 64,500 square feet of commercial space proposed as well.[2]
