Harold Grinspoon

Harold Grinspoon (born 1929)[1] is the founder of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. He made his money as a real estate mogul[1] in Springfield.[2] He took the Giving Pledge.[3]

Biography

He was raised in Newton. He dropped out of college and sold ice cream. After joining the Navy he took a job paper-goods salesman in Springfield.[4] After he was fired from that job he borrowed money from an in-law to buy a two-family house in Agawam.

He was diagnosed with tongue cancer in the 1980s and survived.[2]

Business

Harold Grinspoon made his fortune in real estate.[5] He founded Aspen Square Management which made it his mission to buy run down properties, fix them up and rent them out.[6]

Philanthrophy

Harold Grinspoon established the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation, a private family foundation, in 1986. In 1993 he established the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in in Springfield, Massachusetts.[7] Through the PJ Library the foundation sends Jewish-themed children’s books to Jewish families, at no cost to the recipients. Grinspoon envisions a future when nearly all Jewish children in North America will have his books in their bedtime rotation.[5]

Separately from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation he donates $100,000 to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPEC) every year.[1] He signed Bill Gates and Warren Buffett's Giving Pledge in 2015.[8]
