Hassan Hassan is an author and journalist. He co-wrote the 2015 New York Times Bestseller ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror with Michael Weiss.[1][2][3][4] His work on Islamist groups in the Middle East is widely acclaimed.[5][6] He frequently appeared on flagship television programs, including the O'Reilly Factor,[7] Amanpour[8] and the Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell,[9] and has written for the New York Times, Foreign Policy, the Guardian, Foreign Affairs, among other outlets.[10]
Background
Hassan is from Albu Kamal, Deir Ezzor, in eastern Syria near the Iraqi border.[11] He moved from hometown to Damascus in 2000 to study English literature at the Damascus University.[12] He completed an MA in International Relations at the University of Nottingham, the UK.[13] After graduation, he moved to the United Arab Emirates in 2008 to work as a journalist for The National newspaper, covering domestic and Gulf affairs.[14] He covered the Syrian conflict since the uprising began in 2011.[15] His research on the Islamic State included extensive interviews with members of the organization since its rise in his area in 2014.[16]
Career
His book on the rise of the Islamic State[17] was chosen by the Wall Street Journal as one of 10 must-read works on the evolution of terrorism in the Middle East,[18] one of the Times of London’s Best Books of 2015,[19] and the New York Times' Editors' Choice in April 2015.[20] The book was reviewed favorably twice by the New York Times.[21][22] The New York Times' chief book critic, Michio Kakutani, said the book gave readers "a fine-grained look at the organization’s evolution through assorted incarnations."[23]
Hassan studies Sunni and Shia militant organizations, as well as Iraq, Syria, and the Gulf.[24] His research was commissioned by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace,[25] European Council on Foreign Relations,[26][27] Chatham House,[28] Royal United Services Institute,[29] Brookings Institution,[30] University of Oxford's Gulf studies forum.[31]
Hassan is currently a resident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, a think-tank in Washington DC, and a weekly columnist for The National newspaper in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates.[32][33] He was previously an associate fellow at Chatham House.[34]
On June 2016, Hassan testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on the extremist ideology of ISIS.[35][36]
