Heinrich Altherr

Heinrich Altherr (born on April 11th 1878 in Basel; died April 27th 1947 in Zurich) was a Swiss painter. He painted numerous murals in churches and in public buildings.

In the year 1913 he became a teacher in the art academy in Stuttgart, and a few years later became the Director ( 1919-1921). He taught there above all, image structure and composition and stayed there until 1939, when he returned back to Zurich. Only two years before the ruling national socialist party had called his work part of the so called degenerate arts.

Some of Heinrich Altherrs murals can be seen in the University of Zurich and St. Paul's Church in Basel. His style is expressionist, and his themes are often politically or socially critically lined up.
