Henry Anthony Cameron (born 28 June 1997) is an English-born New Zealand[3] footballer who plays as a midfielder for Blackpool.

Career

Blackpool

Cameron started his football career at Blackpool when he first joined them at 11[4] and began his first-year scholars in 2013.[5] Cameron started playing regularly for them in his first year with the youth side, helping them win North-West Division Development League[6] and reached the Lancashire FA Professional Youth Cup, though they lost to Oldham Athletic.[7]

Cameron signed an 18-month professional contract with Blackpool on 14 January 2015.[8] Upon signing a professional contract, Cameron describe it as a 'dream come true'.[4] He made his debut for Blackpool on 31 January 2015, in a 1-0 home win against Brighton & Hove Albion.[9][10] Cameron then scored his first goal for the club on 15 April 2015 when "Andrea Orlandi coolly swept home Henry Cameron's ball in from the left."[11] During the match against Cardiff City on 25 April 2015, Cameron was at fault when he conceded a penalty after fouling Aron Gunnarsson in the box, allowing Eoin Doyle converted the second goal in the game; ultimately, relegating Blackpool after losing 3-2.[12] Cameron later stated in the club's sessions on In The Spotlight that conceding a penalty was his embarrassing moment in football to date of his career.[13] In his first season at the club, Cameron made eleven appearance for the club and at the end of the season, Cameron was awarded the Chris Muir Memorial Trophy.[14] In June 2015, Cameron signed a contract extension with the club, keeping him until 2017.[15]

In the 2015-16 season, Cameron continued to be in the first team regular, making several starts in the first half of the season. Cameron played a role twice when he assisted the winning goal against Scunthorpe United on 5 September 2015[16] and Swindon Town on 3 October 2015.[17] After suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury that left him out for the whole 2015-16 season, Cameron was making progress from recovery and expected to return in July.[18]

International career

Despite being born in Lytham St Annes, England, it was reported in August 2015 that Anthony Hudson was looking to call Cameron up for the New Zealand national football team.[19] It came after Cameron was discovered to play for New Zealand through his mother.[20] Cameron describe being called up by New Zealand as a proud moment and an honor for his family and himself..[21]

Cameron made his debut for the New Zealand national football team in a 0-1 victory over the Oman on 13 November 2015. However, Cameron's debut suffered a setback when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury, resulting him on a stretcher and was replaced by Alex Rufer.[22] As a result, Cameron was sidelined for the whole 2015-16 season[23] and required to undergo surgery.[24]
