House of Fortune (Chinese: 钱来运转) is a Singaporean drama produced and telecast on Mediacorp Channel 8. The Chinese New Year series, which consists of 20 episodes, will begin its run from 19 January 2016.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] The series is partly sponsored by the Media Development Authority of Singapore. This series is preempted on 8 and 9 February 2016, due to Chinese New Year specials.
Plot
Qian Renjie (Thomas Ong) and Luo Shuping (Tong Bing Yu) decide to sell their HDB flat and upgrade into a condominium. However, the upgrade comes with a hefty price, leaving the couple with no savings. Renjie’s sister, Qian Meiling (Kym Ng), loves to purchase things on instalments. Her husband, Wu Guolun (Yao Wenlong), is a spendthrift who is burdened with expensive car instalments. At work, Renjie is being oppressed by his superior and he resigns in a huff. Meanwhile, Shuping’s tactless nature gets the better of her and she soon finds herself under-performing at work. Guolun decides to pursue his dreams as a lyricist and quits his job. He spends a lot of effort on his songwriting but the response is underwhelming. To fulfil his dream, Guolun sells off his house for cash to start a music studio. Unfortunately, his partner fled with the money. Meiling hears that she has a relative who owns a bungalow, a senile old man named Qian Laoshi (Zhu Houren). Thinking that this relative can save her from her financial woes, Meiling and her family moves into his house while pretending to care for Laoshi. Shuping hears of this and encourages Renjie to move in as well, so that she can rent out their apartment to pay off the mortgage. Instead of helping his “poor” relatives, Laoshi turns their lives upside down. Can they eventually overcome their misfortunes?

Inconsistencies
There were technical errors in the Chinese subtitling on Channel 8 where it stopped showing for a brief period, beginning from this drama whenever the derogatory term for being a wretch, "死八婆", as well as similar terms, is uttered. This is already evident in episode 12, where Yao Wenlong calls Kym Ng the derogatory term twice, before correcting himself to mean that she is a "黄脸婆" (an old hag). The old hag term is also used on her in a later episode.
