Howard Garfinkel

Howard Garfinkel (died 2016) is a the former head of Five-Star Basketball Camp.

Career

He played high school basketball at Barnard High School.[1] In 1965, he started the High School Basketball Illustrated a scouting service that was based on New York-area players in 1965.[2] This was a major recruiting tool for 20 years for college coaches nationwide looking for players in the city known for its hoops talent.[2] His camp ran from 1964-2008 [3] By 1980, his camp was considered to be the Mecca of Summer Basketball.[4] In 2008 the NCAA ended such camps.[2] His camps produced over 600 NBA players and 10,000 NCAA Division 1 Players.[1] His camps had players like Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Lebron James, Moses Malone, Vince Carter, Isiah Thomas, and Alonzo Mourning. His camps were at many places such as the Poconos, Virginia and Pittsburgh.[3] Garfinkel worked with various legendary coaches such as Chuck Daly, Bobby Knight, Rick Pitino and John Calipari.[3] Garfinkel was the founder of the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.[5] He was inducted in 2014 into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.[4] Garfinkel died in 2016.[5] His death was reported to be as a result of lung cancer.[1]
