"I Hate U, I Love U" (stylized as "i hate u, i love u") is a song recorded by American singer Gnash featuring singer Olivia O'Brien. It was released on February 17, 2016, as the first single from Gnash's third extended play, us (2016).[1] The song peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. Outside the United States, the song topped the charts in Australia, a first for both Gnash and O'Brien, and peaked within the top ten of the charts in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Indonesia, Norway and the United Kingdom.[2]
Background and release
Gnash paired up with Bay Area singer-songwriter Olivia O'Brien to create this song. O'Brien originally wrote the track and already had a working relationship with Gnash at the time, having covered his tune "Disposable." Gnash originally released the song on July 26, 2015, on his SoundCloud page.[3] It was released commercially on iTunes on February 17, 2016, becoming the lead single of Gnash's extended play, us (2016).
Lyrical interpretation
The song is a stripped-back piano ballad with minimal beats, and it expresses the aftermath of a sad breakup when both ex-lovers are still missing each other. While O'Brien (featured) is still in the same emotional place as when they broke up, Gnash has partly been able to move on.
Gnash explained in a Genius.com annotation, "I never really felt what moving on felt like, even after the first time we broke up, because the door never really closed. This time because I'm deciding to I'm actually feeling it and it sucks."
The lyric When love and trust are gone / I guess this is moving on is a reference to the line I guess this is growing up in "Dammit" by Blink-182.[4]
Music video
The music video for the song was released to YouTube on March 7, 2016.[5]
