Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) is an autonomous premier engineering and technology university located in Dharwad. The new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Dharwad would start functioning from July, 2016 in a temporary campus housed at Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Belur village on the outskirts of Dharwad city.[2] For the academic year 2016-2017, it will offer B.Tech courses in three core branches namely Electrical, Computer Science and Mechanical.[3]

As part of the mentorship plan, IIT-Bombay would be the mentor for IIT-Dharwad. The HRD Ministry had set up an IIT monitoring cell at IIT-Bombay and the committee members had been designated as officials on special duty to supervise the process of setting up IIT-Dharwad.[4][5]

History

With the Ministry of Human Resource Development giving its green signal for setting up of an IIT in Dharwad, the 17-year long wait for the same ended. It was the late Union Human Resources Development Minister S R Bommai, who had moved the proposal to the Centre seeking an IIT in Dharwad in the 1990s. In 1998, a committee headed by former ISRO chairman and space scientist U R Rao submitted its report recommending an IIT in Hubballi-Dharwad.[2][6] In the 2015-16 union budget, an IIT was sanctioned for Karnataka state and the state government suggested three locations for IIT in Karnataka. The short listed cities were Dharwad, Mysuru and Raichur.[7] The high powered committee appointed by HRD ministry, chose Dharwad city, after visiting all the three short listed cities. Leaders from all political parties, plus a few prominent citizens, including a few ex-NRIs from Dharwad city put a lot of efforts to get this prestigious institute to Dharwad city, as there was a lot of competition among cities to get this premier institute.

Campus & Location

IIT-Dharwad would be initially functioning out of the campus of Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) in Dharwad. The permanent building would be coming at Chikkamaligawad village. Earlier, around 500 acres belong to KIADB near Mummigatti on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway off Dharwad was identified for the IIT campus, but that deal was cancelled due to legal hurdles. The State Cabinet decided to allot 470 acres of land at Kelageri village adjunct to Mammigahtti Industrial Area in Dharwad district.[8] The historic fort of Kittur, where Rani Chennamma fought the British in 1824, is just 20 kilometers from the IIT Dharwad campus.[1] The city also houses educational institutions like Karnataka University and Karnatak Science, Arts and Commerce College and University of Agricultural Sciences, Law university[9] and also new Institutes like IIIT[10] are coming up in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad.[1]

Cultural and non-academic activities

The twin city of Hubballi-Dharwad offers opportunities to enjoy classical music (Savai Gandharva, Mallikarjun Mansoor, Gangubai Hangal and Bhimsen Joshi and Sudha Murthy hail from this region), Fine arts and Theatre.[1]

Forty seats each in the streams of computer science , electrical and mechanical engineering are being made available at the institute and classes are slated to begin after July 15, 2016, along with the other IITs across the country.[11]
