Janette Deacon (neé Buckland, born 1939) is a South African archaeologist, writer and professor. She studies the development of tools found in cave sites in the Western Cape.[2]
Biography
Deacon was born in Cape Town in 1939.[3] She graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1960, after which she worked as W.J. Talbot's research assistant.[4] Between 1962 and 1972, she lectured at UCT.[3] She became the head of the Department of Archaeology at Stellenbosch University in 1971.[4] Deacon was the editor of the South African Archaeological Bulletin from 1976 to 1993.[5]
Deacon became the first chairperson for Heritage Western Cape (HWC) in 2002.[6]
In 2016, she earned an honorary doctorate in literature from UCT for her writing and scholarship on human origins in South Africa.[7]
