Jersey is the debut solo EP by American singer and actress Bella Thorne, released on November 17, 2014 by Hollywood Records. Thorne promoted the EP for a one time, in the event Shall We Dance on Ice, in Bloomington, Illinois, on December 16, 2014, when she performed "Jersey".[1]

Background

“Everything is very different so it is hard to say I have some Coachella music, I have some R&B, some more Ke$ha talk-y music, I wanted there to be a song for everyone I don’t want it to just be you hear a song on the radio and say, ‘Oh that kinda sounds like Bella Thorne,’ like she would sing a song like that. I want it to be so versatile and different.”

In March 2013, Thorne announced she'd been signed to Hollywood Records, and began working on her debut album.[3] On 23 April 2013, she discussed details about her upcoming album, telling MTV: “What fans can expect is [for it] just to be very different from anyone, because I don’t like to be one of those artists where you can be like: ‘Oh yeah, I know them from that song.’ All my songs are very different from each other. So I don’t want to be known as only one genre.”[4] On 28 March 2014, Thorne announced her debut album would be named as the single, and confirmed it will consist of eleven songs.[5]

In a Billboard article published on May 2, 2014, it was revealed that the album would be called Call It Whatever, and the release date would be June 24, 2014.[6] Thorne revealed the reason why the album took so long was because "I really wanted to work on my voice. I never sang before, and I didn't want to put an album out that I wasn't proud of, or that was Auto-tuned or anything like that. I waited so that I could take a lot of vocal classes, so that I could work on my voice every day".[7][8] Thorne confirmed that inevitable comparisons to former Disney stars Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez, that she would not go in either direction.[9] Thorne described the sound of her album as having differentiation, and several songs being aimed at a variety of audiences.[2] Thorne, who said she’s been listening to a wide variety of music to get inspiration, from Usher to Destiny’s Child to Band of Horses, hints that there will be a collaboration on the album, but unfortunately for “Shake it Up” fans.[2]

Full album cancellation

However, on October 15, Thorne announced that her full-length debut album would be scrapped in favor of an EP instead.[10][11][12] Thorne later opened up about the real reason her album never dropped — she says she had no intention of becoming a singer, and wasn't happy with the "auto-tuned bad music" she had in the works. Thorne told "J-14" in April 2015: "The reason why the album did not come out is because... look, I never wanted to really be an amazing singer. Honestly, I was tone deaf when I first got on the [Disney] Channel. I literally auditioned for Shake It Up! and I was like, 'I don't sing and I don't dance. I have no idea why I'm here'," she said."[13]

Development

In an interview with Access Hollywood, she promoted the EP as very feminist.[14] On October 23, Thorne announced a song from the EP, entitled "One More Night".[15] The following week, Thorne announced the official track list along with a preview of "Paperweight" and sneak peek of possible album artwork.[16][17] Bella spoke about the album's direction in the form of its genre's, saying "Call It Whatever" is my youngest-sounding song, This song is definitely for my younger audience. I don't want to eliminate them, but my album is geared a little bit older. I have some more Indie type of songs, some hip-hop, some with an 80s feel, and I have dance music on there."[9]
