Joe Mixon (born July 24, 1996) is an American football running back for the Oklahoma Sooners.
Early Years
Mixon attended Freedom High School (Oakley, California) where he played football and basketball. He was a three-year starter at running back for the Freedom Falcons football team. He rushed for 1134 yards and 13 touchdowns as a Sophomore on 171 carries. In his junior year he rushed for 1443 yards and 21 touchdowns on 201 carries. In his final year, he rushed for 1704 yards and 23 touchdowns on 226 carries.[1]
Mixon played in 16 basketball games for the falcons scoring a total of 195 points. He maintained a 12.2 PPG average and a free throw % of 57% ad made a total of 79 field goals. His team went 22-2 overall and 10-0 in league play that season.[2]
Mixon was ranked as a five-star recruit and the No. 1 running back in the nation by Rivals.com In January 2014, he committed to the University of Oklahoma to play college football. He had 47 offers including those from Alabama, Cal, Florida State and UCLA.[3]
College career
Mixon was red-shirted after a misdemeanor assault charge in October 2014. He earned playing time his sophomore year playing in all 12 games with three starts. In his first career game, Mixon had a 76-yard touchdown reception; the longest catch ever by an OU freshman running back. He also ran for 27 yards on 5 carries for an average of 5.4 yards per carry against Akron. At the conclusion of the 2015 regular season Mixon had run for 749 yards on 110 carries averaging 6.8 yards. He rushed for 7 touchdowns and set his career long carry at 66 yards. The Sooners also utilized him as a receiver giving him 25 receptions for 345 yards averaging 13.8 yards per reception and 4 touchdowns.[4][5]
Criminal charges
Mixon entered an Alford plea to a misdemeanor assault charge in October 2014 for punching Amelia Molitor in response to her pushing and hitting him, after he referred to a friend she was with as a "faggot" among other derogatory words, and insults. This occurred after he tried to "pick her up" around 2:00 A.M, and she chose to ignore his advances. It also happened to be the early morning hours after his 18th birthday. The incident happened on July 25, 2014 at a Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe in Norman, on Campus Corner. Campus Corner is known for its square mile of bars and after hours restaurants. The Surveillance video of the incident shows, after the two had an argument, Amelia Molitor pushing, then slapping Mixon, followed by Mixon punching Molitor, but that video was not released.[6] He broke bones in her face which resulted in hospitalization and surgery. Mixon received a one-year deferred sentence and was required to perform 100 hours of community service and undergo counseling. Molitor filed suit in federal court against Mixon on July 22, 2016. She accused Mixon of negligence, willful and wanton misconduct, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.[7]
