Mitchell Quilleon Brown, known by his stage name Kid Quill, is an American hip hop recording artist. He made his first notable appearance with his debut album Ear To Ear charting on the Top 40 iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap charts. The name Kid Quill originates from his middle name Quilleon with the addition of Kid to the beginning.[1] In October 2016, Brown released his sophomore album The Name Above The Title[2] which charted Top 10 on iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap charts.

Early life

Brown was born to Doug Brown and Cathy Quilleon Brown from Seymour, Indiana. He also has a younger sister Julia. Brown is an alumnus of Shelbyville Senior High School (Class of 2012).

Soccer career

While attending Shelbyville High School, Brown was a 3-time Hoosier Heritage All-Conference First Team, 2-time Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Top Team Player Awards, 2-time Indiana All-District First Team, 3-time Top Drawer Soccer Player to Watch, 2-time Indianapolis Star Super Team, 2011 Indiana All-State 3rd Team Selection, and 2012 NSCAA Soccer All-American Scholar.[3][4]

He decided to continue his soccer career by playing for DePauw University at the collegiate level. He had 3 appearances his freshman year and 2 his sophomore year. In the 2012 season, DePauw finished their season 14-2-5 after losing to Dominican in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.[5]

His junior year, Brown decided to quit soccer because the balance of music, soccer, and school was too much.[6]

Music career

While in high school, Brown would battle rap with friends in his basement. One of his friends decided to record Brown rapping and uploaded it to YouTube where it received a good amount of views.[7] Noticing that there was potential, he decided to pursue rapping.

In 2012, he joined Tripl3 Crown Entertainment, a label located in Shelbyville, Indiana. Under Tripl3 Crown Entertainment, he recorded his first mixtape First Cut. He caught his first major break by opening for Jake Miller on February 23, 2013 at the Deluxe at Old National Centre.

After opening for Jake Miller, he left Tripl3 Crown Entertainment and created Norham Road Records with his manager.

On June 17, 2014, he released his debut album Ear to Ear on iTunes. Ear to Ear peaked at #34 on the iTunes Hip/Hop charts.[8] This album contained features from Marc Goone, Nick Luebke, Kaijowan, and Alex Hall. It was produced by Travis 'Kold Kut' Moore who has worked with artists such as Mike Posner and Kirko Bangz.[9] He followed the release of Ear to Ear by performing shows alongside Mike Stud, Riff Raff, SoMo, Wale and Huey Mack.

Near the end of 2014, Brown released several singles such as Disney, ABC, and Lollipop.

For all of 2015, no music was released from Brown. But he did continue performing as he embarked on The College Tour & The College Tour: Second Semester. The College Tour included performing at the March Madness Music Festival in Indianapolis, IN alongside Rihanna, Bleachers, and Passion Pit.[10] He also accompanied Taylor Caniff in Indianapolis and SoMo for several shows. The College Tour: Second Semester was his first tour headlining all of the shows (except Ubahn Fest[11]). This tour included his first time performing at his college: DePauw University.[12]

Brown started 2016 off with the release of several singles such as Downtime,[13] Dose of Reality,[14] and Shine A Light (Remix).[15]

In February 2016, he embarked on his largest tour yet: The Last Semester Tour. Later on in 2016 he performed at the Common Ground Music Festival in Lansing, Michigan alongside Jason Derulo and Daya.[16]

On October 14, 2016, Brown released his sophomore album The Name Above The Title.[17] This album contained features from national acts Mark Battles, Devvon Terrell, Spencer Sutherland, and CallMeKarizma.[2] It charted Top 10 on iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap and Top 105 on iTunes All Genres. It also charted as a Billboard Heatseaker. [18]
