Kitten (band)

Kitten is an American indie rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. In 2010, they released their first EP, Sunday School. In 2011, they followed up with the release of their second EP Cut It Out. In August 2013, the EP Like a Stranger was made available on iTunes. Kitten's self-titled debut album, produced by Chad Anderson and Gavin MacKillop, was released on June 24, 2014. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it #16 on its list of 20 Best Pop Albums of 2014. Kitten has also garnered media attention from Nylon, Vice, Rolling Stone, Interview, Teen Vogue, Spin. They also briefly signed with Velvet Hammer Music and Management Group in February 2014 but left in June of the same year.

Kitten has opened for the bands No Doubt, Paramore, The Neighbourhood, Electric Six, Young the Giant, Garbage and Charli XCX.^[2] Spin.com has described lead singer Chaidez as having "a raw power and believability as a performer."^[3]

In 2016 Kitten released their EP titled "Heaven Or Somewhere in Between" which was included in the "Best Pop Albums of 2016 So Far" in June of that same year by Rolling Stone.

Kitten has been billed for festivals such as SXSW, Jubilee, Edgefest, Middle of the Map Festival, Summerfest and Riot Fest.

History

Chloe Chaidez's early interest in music stemmed from her father who was a drummer in Los Angeles' early punk scene. By ten, Chloe had already begun playing bass and formed her own band, Wild Youth.^[4][5] By twelve, she was opening for indie artists such as Midlake, Band of Horses and Conor Oberst. Kitten's debut album, produced by Chad Anderson and Gavin MacKillop, ranked #16 on Rolling Stone Magazine's Best Pop Albums of 2014.

Through songwriting collaborations with her manager, producer and musical mentor Chad Anderson, the singer came to her now signature sound: a blend of the ferocious power of late '70s post punk with the sonic textures and rhythms of British new wave.^[6]

Although the original production team of Chad Anderson and Nick Johns remained, Kitten went through a lineup change with their second EP Cut It Out. Max Kuehn (drums), Elvis Kuehn (synth/guitar) and Zach Carper (bass) quit the band to fully commit to FIDLAR, the second band they were juggling at the time.^[7]

In October 2013, shortly after the release of their Like a Stranger EP, Kitten announced the departure of band members Waylon Rector, Zach Bilson, and Lukas Frank. Bryan De Leon would remain with Kitten until the conclusion of the Fall 2013 Charli XCX tour, and would then part ways as well.

On February 4, 2014, soon after the conclusion of the Charli XCX tour, De Leon, Bilson, and Rector rejoined Kitten, and the band joined The Neighbourhood on their spring headlining tour. However, by May 24, 2014 all three announced via Twitter that they had again decided to leave the band.
